Why do yankee 'fans' continually bring up owner's wealth, and say they don't want to win because they put that money into team payroll? They ignore (as usual) that steinbrenner has the same wealth, but also an INCREDIBLE advantage when it comes to revenue. Why is that?
To sit there and smugly say 'MY owner wants to win more than YOUR owner' is an absolute crock of chit - and you know it. To say he's 'obssessed' with winning - what owner isn't? What owner doesn't look at every option to win? Unlike your monkey george, owners in small markets have to be MORE obssessed with winning than someone who can gloss over problems with another paycheck to another superstar.
Tell me, which team owner and GM worked harder this year: steinbrenner and cashman, who had a payroll approaching $200 million, had some injuries to their outfield, so could afford to pay another $15+million to Abreu to win, or the twins, who have a fraction of that salary, and had one of their ace pitchers go down in the middle of the year, yet have been able to stay red hot and compete for the best record in the AL?
If you sit there and say it's the yankess' organization - that speaks volumes about just how truly BLIND you are.
I would not listen to anything that axtroll has to say regarding math. His math skills were proved to be lacking just this past week when he could not even add/subtract to 10, and make sense. he then as is his MO twist and spinned his way out of it by claiming he was misunderstood.
<< <i>I worked for a baseball owner. Trust me, they're not exactly all that interested in winning when it comes to having to having a reasonable payroll to do so. >>
I didn't ever profess to say they ALL were interested in winning - the owner of the devil rays, for example, is in a hopeless situation. They are up against 3 teams in their own division who spends $100+ million plus. How can they possibly be interested in losing 10s of millions a year possibly HOPING to win?
<< <i>Are you BLIND? Why do you always focus on just the revenue side and not profits, which Yankees are lacking in spades? >>
The blind one here is YOU if you think for a second to think the yankees aren't profitable. Talk about ignorant!
To say he's 'obssessed' with winning - what owner isn't? What owner doesn't look at every option to win?
If you truly believe that, you're even more misinformed than I thought. That statement is absolutely untrue and anyone that knows anything about baseball knows it.

Proof ?
While other owners are invisible and composed of minority shareholders, or corporate morons who couldnt tell you what a 6-4-3 double play is, Steinbrenner LIVES for his team.
How many owners let any sort of personal feelings, and more importantly, emotions, cloud their business decisions and fiscal responsibilty and judgement ? MAYBE Mark Cuban ?
His burning desire to be the BEST, to WIN, to carry on the tradition of the franchise are evident in everything he does. Even if at times he has meddled and said or done the wrong thing it is all a product of his love for winning and being the best.
He continually ponies up more money than he has to. He endlessly pursues the best product. He relentlessly hands over money to OTHER franchises without saying boo or crying foul about it, even if its out of his OWN pocket. All this just to do whatever it takes to be the best.
The fact remains. If Steinbrenner puts a $125 million dollar team out there every year, they will compete with the best of them, generate roughly the same revenue, AND he would have roughly $500 million more in his OWN pocket over the last 5 years alone.
You want to complain, go complain to the dopes at Nintendo America, who run a company making FAR more than Steinbrenner ever will. Where are they reaching into their OWN pockets to put a better product on the field for the fans and people of Seattle ?

I thought this interesting, today it was mentioned that the Marlins received 30 million in luxuary tax, yet they have a payroll of 15 million.
This could possibly prove a few things.
1 the owner of that team cares only to profit
2 with his team in the thick of it for amost the last 2 months he felt that his team is good enough for his market. 2 world series wins in 10 years using this strategy blows teams like the red sox away.
3 by keeping payroll low and playing rookies he always has money to sign young talent.
as for the relevance of my previous post in this discussion, I would think that if the sox charge almost 100.00 per patron per game that they would have enough to match the yanks dollar for dollar in salary. (or be closer then they CHOOSE to be.
I hope that answered any questions as to relevance. I should have made my point more concise. I'll jump back on the wagon now.
I think that one thing that a lot of the haters are overlooking is the New York factor. The Yankees aren't just competing against 15 other American League teams during the regular season. They are competing with the Mets on a daily basis as well. It's all about being tops with Steinbrenner, not just in the AL but in NY as well. If the Mets are doing well, the Yankees HAVE to do just as well. Hence, combine that desire to be tops in baseball with the desire to be on the back page of the Post and News in a positive light every day and you get a recipe for an owner that only believes in winning.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Steve, I really have no idea where those numbers come from, or if they are even accurate. I attend anywhere from 10-20 Sox games a year, and when I have actually paid for the seats (sometimes I get comps) I have paid anywhere from $30 - $75 per seat. But, the Monster seats have a face value of $125. So, ticket prices vary quite a bit.
