So Much for the Death of the Toning Premium

French 1 Franc - eBay

You know, nice coin, but.... geez.

I guess toned coins aren't dead after all.

    Hi DrJ.

Well... I've seen 66's going in the $25 to $100 certified. Now whether 1909 is some key date, I'm not sure. But, I don't think so. I'm going to find out.

Just going by the NGC census, there is one certified for that date in 66. Two in 64.

But, darkside pop numbers are pretty meaningless IMO.

The high bidder has lots of toned Morgan Dollars in his history, good chance he doesn't know much about
    the coin he's bidding on.

Actually, it's a she, who has inquired about a couple of my coins. I also checked her past feedback and saw what she's been buying, and the prices paid. I agree with your analysis.

Jeez, even I wouldn't pay that kind of "stupid money" for a toner image

Now while I love the Sower design very much, that price does seem to be a bit high! image

Who thought the toning premium was dead?

Apparently you haven't been reading the US forum lately, have you JamminJ?

There has been much adu about toning.

I guess I need to contemplate ending my career of posting in lite of the fact that this is the second time this week when I didn't know what to say... image

Oh, that? I would have never made the connection. Even the US coins that are known to be fake (MadMarty nickels, Peac_ck Ikes, Appalacian hoard, etc.) still bring really stong prices as long as they are holdered.

Personally, I think dynamic toned coins will always bring a premium. I think there has been an exaggerated reaction to recent events on the US forum.

As for this coin, I don't care how vibrant it is--that's far more a premium than I would be willing to pay.
