Bluemooned again.

Well I had luck with my first batch of Bluemoon offers, so I figured I'd make an offer on the lone remaining Swiss 5 Franc piece they had, an 1879 Shooting Thaler, PCGS AU55.

I found their BIN price of $999 to be just a tad high image, so I offered $80, justifying it by stating that Krause lists XF at $60 and UNC at $100.

Offer accepted.

Their pics below; will reimage when I receive it. Seems flat, but there's probably more lustre than the pics imply.

LOVE that reverse design. Swiss coins are just way too cool...

  • 8% of the asking price isn't bad!

Very nice design, it bugs me when coins aren't straight in the holder though, nit picker that I am

Actually, I don't think it's necessarily either of the above.

Almost all of their merchandise is posted with exorbitantly high BINs; most are $499 or $999 regardless of the coin's actual value. My guess is to encourage offers and allow them to pick and choose whom to sell to (check out a buyer's feedback and transaction history prior to committing, which actually is somewhat smart). I seriously doubt any of the coins have ever been purchased with straight BINs, given that they are SO far above normal retail prices. If they are, the buyer is a complete idiot and gets what he/she deserves.

From a publicity or word-of-mouth standpoint though, I think this can backfire on the long run, as the approach just serves to (1) reinforce that Blue Moon is clueless, and (2) scare away potentially serious parties (someone posted to that effect in my initial Blue Moon thread, that they never would have considered making a realistic offer BECAUSE the BIN number was so far away).

I don't let the BIN price affect my valuation and offer on a coin. I make my offer regardless of how far away it is from the BIN, knowing that I am offering based on tangible market prices or catalog figures (as opposed to simply being a numbnut that is lowballing for the sake of lowballing), and ultimately what I am willing to pay.

You got a nice coin at the right price.
  • Geez, and I was hard on that bidder who offered you 15% of your ask in that eBay thread. Nevermind. Congratulations. image

I do realize yours was reasonable ask and Bluemoon's was not.

It sounds like you gave a reason for your offer. Do you think they would have accepted it if you had made the offer without any explanations?

I offer them $80 for this one. I didn't see where I could justify my offer.

On the page where you place your offer, there should be a link for "Additional offer terms". If you click that, it pops open a text field where you can add a note/question/comment... up to 250 charactes I believe.

Possibly not. I really don't know.

If I make an offer that is fairly close to the BIN, I usually don't give a reason. However, if there is a large gap I always put in some sort of explanation, so the seller doesn't think I'm just arbitrarily lowballing them and/or wasting their time.

I always figure that providing more information and/or justification cannot hurt.

  • I thought I'd start the offer process just to remind myself where it is that you get a chance to make a comment/justification, but here's what I saw:

Does anyone know the source of animousity towards bluemoon? Were they posting on CU boards?
  • coinpicturescoinpictures Posts: 5,345 ✭✭✭
They offer high-dollar so-called "mystery lots" showing only the backside of slabs, so depending on what you buy the lot for, there is speculation that coins are swapped in or out. Also some people have had problems with returns.

they are barely worth slabbing fees with many ICG MS67 Lincolns and use CU values fore them, when they would probably grade MS65 PCGS

How about 294 negative/neutral feedback postings from buyers?

C'mon now! Raw numbers without context is dirty pool. Their feedback rating is 99.5% positive, hardly poor by any stretch:

    Feedback Score: 15659
    Positive Feedback: 99.5%
Members who left a positive: 15728
Members who left a negative: 72
    All positive feedback received: 35539

I'm not claiming they're lily-white, but their feedback paints a slightly different picture than the uber-negative one presented here on the board...

Nice price! I had been tempted to offer on that one but opted for the Swiss piece instead...
