I've been spending at least $10K a year for the past 4 years on cards, thankfully most of it has retained it's value (very little wax purchases). I had started off with a pretty OK collection from my early days in the hobby. My Beckett "My Collections" total is $91, 443.06 . Obvious Beckett values are a bit off, but I also don't have all of my cards in there, my autographed card collection isn't in there (nor would the values be right if they were), my graded cards are not correctly valued in it, nor are any of the "too scarce to price" low print and 1 of 1 cards I own. I'm not sure what the total spent on my collection is, but I'd say that it hasn't lost much of it's value.

I knew it all along......now ....what did you spend on your collection and what's it worth now? chaz >>
Thanks for asking, Chaz! There's almost nothing I like more than talking about the value of my cards, and it's so kind of you to ask. Now then-- last I checked my T-20...... Oh, wait! darn it! Duncan just finished waxing the Testerossa, and I promised Marie-Claire (my darling wife) that I'd spin her over to the stables this afternoon to look over the new Arabians. But we'll continue this delightful chat when I return! TTFN!

I quote John McEnroe as he berated a moron umpire at Wimbledon: "THE QUESTION JERK.....ANSWER THE QUESTION!!" So I ask you for the last time Boopotts.......how much did you spend and what's it worth honestly or are you too ashamed to admit it? chaz >>
Or, to quote the cast of the Breakfast Club when they're asking Molly Ringwald if she's still a virgin: "JUST ANSWER THE QUESTION, CLAIRE. IT'S ONLY ONE QUESTION!"
Seriously? I probably have about $2500 worth of stuff here at the house that isn't for sale, and about another $1000 or so that's listed in my Ebay store. >>
<< <i>Ive spent a small fortune on my collection in the past 20 years or so. I couldnt put a price tag on the enjoyment they have given me, but if I had to guess I would say its worth.....a few pennies. >>

Around these boards, that is a drop in the bucket, a few days at the National, or one Mastro Auction invoice.

After wasting maybe $500-$600 on late 80's junk, I settled down and have mostly bought 50's and 60's HOFers like Aaron and Mays, with a handful of Drysdales, Fords, Ryans etc thrown in. PSA 7 or better, just one here and there. There's not a lot of appreciation there, at least not yet, but they're sweet cards. Those are the classic cards IMO and nothing they print now has the same beauty. Look at a crisp 55 Topps and see if there is anything printed in the last 20 years that gives you the same feeling. And I doubt there are warehouses full of unopened cases. I don't know the dollar value, I don't plan to sell them....I figure they'll be handed down to my kids someday. Aaron or Bonds? Mays or Sosa? Maris or McGwire? To me there's no question there!

Right on about the 50's and 60's cards. I love the 57's. chaz
My collecting habits sound similar to Bri and Shawn's. I collect mostly football, and started in 1983 when I was 9. I split my money between Super Mario Bros., Joust, and Football cards for a while. After 1989, I became disgusted with the proliferation of sets, so I quit collecting until 2000. Since 2000, I've been collecting vintage football that I always was interested in, but could never find or afford as a kid. So, I've spent about $40k over the last 6 years. I'm not sure what I spent in the '80s. Maybe $2000 total, including gifts and all? That seems a little high though.
My '80s cards are probably worth $500 now. I don't think I've been screwed too badly on many of my vintage cards, although I have overspent on a few. I've also got a reasonable deal on some of them. Some have gone up, but most have stayed at least steady, I would say. I probably have $40k worth of vintage football.
My collection is not very large as far as number of cards goes, but it covers over 30 years of baseball cards of all variety from Topps and Topps "test issues", OPC, Fleer, Donruss, UD, Score, Pinnacle etc.. to oddball food issues, discs, pogs, phonecards and toy and game cards. The collection consists of over 3,500 different Nolan Ryan cards from 1967-1999 and over 350 Pete Rose cards from 1963-2005. I've been collecting Nolan Ryan for 13 years and Pete Rose for 1 year now. I estimate I've spent around $75,000 over the last 13 years and estimate it's value now conservatively at about $50,000. Most of the loss is on the early Nolan Ryan cards that I paid top dollar for just after he retired in 1993. With exception of the really rare Nolan Ryan cards most of his cards from the 60's and 70's are cheaper now than they were 10 years ago, unless they are high grade PSA cards, in which case they are more expensive now.
