I have spent almost $200 grand over the past 20 years and because of my mistakes (late 80's and early 90's modern crap), I conservatively estimate it be worth around $100 grand. No BS. chaz

I mean this seriously - I have no idea - and I haven't done a very good job of keeping track of my total purchases either.
But, I guarantee I'm with ya on some really bad purchases.
The bad wax is probably in the 2-3 thousand range.
Wax that I bought to have fun and make a set with my son has personal intrinsic value only.
I would guess I have spend about 75 - 100K in the past 25 yrs. And value? I'm clueless.

That sounds about right. I know when I think of chaz the first thing that comes to mind is a fabulously wealthy man with a 6 figure collection.
Thanks for confirming what I'm sure many here already suspected.
I only deal in invest-ibles.
Loves me some shiny!

Hey Mike - I have some real horror stories. I will let them out one at a time because they are painful.
1st Horror Story-
1992- purchased (3) 16 box wax cases of 1992 Topps Stadium club high series basketball (shaq rookie) @ $2400 case.....now their worth $300-400 case and he has won 4 titles. chaz

I bought a case of 92T SC BB at about 700$? Now worth? zilch!
I bought 2 boxes of 91T SC BB with Thomas card - paid 135$ per - now? zilch! I still have them!
I know you must have some triumphs?
More fun to talk about.

Picked up a Gretzky rookie in 1981 at a card show for 12 bucks (I said to my cousin at the time ... who would spend 12 bucks on a hockey card??). It later graded a PSA 8 ...that's a good one. chaz

To much.

Not enough.
But seriously I don't have a clue what I've spent and in all honesty don't care what it's worth.
Have lots of trash and lots of treasures but for me I get enjoyment out of it all.

When I first read this I almost peed myself laughing, but then I got to thinking: Let's take what we know about chaz and juxtapose it with what we know about other middle aged men who have 20K+ a year to spend on sportscards. So I did this, and the results were surprising.
Here's what we know about chaz:
1) Has a limited understanding of English grammar.
2) Uses a picture of Michael Jordan as an avatar.
3) Likes to sign off on posts by reminding other board members that he's 'keeping it real'.
So, after further review-- what successful middle aged man DOESN'T exhibit these traits? I'm a fool for having doubted you, chaz. Heck, if it wasn't for your handle and avatar I wouldn't be able to to tell you, Dav and FabFrank apart!!

Thanks for asking, Chaz! There's almost nothing I like more than talking about the value of my cards, and it's so kind of you to ask. Now then-- last I checked my T-20...... Oh, wait! darn it! Duncan just finished waxing the Testerossa, and I promised Marie-Claire (my darling wife) that I'd spin her over to the stables this afternoon to look over the new Arabians. But we'll continue this delightful chat when I return! TTFN!

<< <i>I built a lot of my collection through buying collections or lots and selling off what I didn't want. I have been selling and setting up at shows since I was 11 and most everything in my collection is stuff that I cleared off of larger deals. The deals started out small and grew over the years. Some cards I bought with money I made on deals so I marked them off as cleared, even though I used liquid cash to buy them. If I sold my collection today, I think I could get $25,000 so that means likely $20,000. >>
Thanks. Appreciate the input. chaz

I never had much money to buy and sit on cases so I lucked out there. I do buy a case or two now of Finest FB. I hope for a strong RC auto crop to be able to sell off the boxes that I dont open and cut my costs overall on my set.
So far I have had good luck I am working on a couple late 90's early 00's sets to get me Finest complete.
I am not sure how much its all worth right now. But since my early costs were low I should be ahead. My main problem is actually selling stuff. Though I will have to when I bring all of my cards home from my parents. There are just way too many to store.
Collecting:
Brett Favre Master Set
Favre Ticket Stubs
Favre TD Reciever Autos
Football HOF Player/etc. Auto Set
Football HOF Rc's
<< <i>I dont know how much I have spent over the years. When I was a kid in the 80's I use to collect every set that was issued. BB, FB, Bkb and even some hockey. Hell cards were cheap. The in the ninetys in high school I worked at a card shop and was able to buy boxes at cost. So now I have about 3-4 sets of everything issued in the late 80's early 90's. I stopped working there in college before the proliferation of cards, so to speak. Then they got to expensive for me to keep up with my previous pace. So I just went back to FB only. Packs here and there to get Favres. Maybe put a set together. Now I only work on Favre's, Finest FB sets, Auto HOFer's and other small interests.

Nice. Thanks for the input and good luck. chaz
Since then I have bought and sold often when my interests have changed or money was needed. I would say that an honest, low ball estimate my collection is around $20k now. Modest when compared to many, but certainly well within what my budget has allowed.
Most importantly, my collection, for once in my life entails stuff that really 100 % means something to me, which in the end is all that matters.

<< <i>Im ahead. In the 80's I was too young ( meaning 7 in 1980 to 16 in 1989 ) to really spend that much. I got out of the hobby for yrs...didnt start up again till about 2002.

<< <i>What was spent is hard to tell, since most of it was acquired as a kid. I remember, as an example, the MOST I spent at a time for one card was 6.00 ea. for some 1956 Aarons in about Ex condition. This wasnt at a flea market, but at the old Fort Washington shows from dealers that had them in the old 8 pocket pages. A lot of us can remember the early 70's when indoor flea markets would be held in old converted bowling alleys, and many a person would have stacks and stacks and pages and pages of vintage nm cards for a nickel apiece (and that was a LOT of money for what was offered at the time). People would have their "special" cards (high dollar) in penny sleeves thumbtacked on a bulletin board for the big spenders. 25-50 bucks each could have bought you all the Playball DiMaggios you could handle...... >>
Great stories....those were the good ole days....if we only knew. Thanks. chaz

I can relate to this. I couldn't spend more much than a $2 a day at the age of 10 and 12, buying packs and packs of 83-85 topps, three at a time every day it seemed, while the second dollar went to playing Super Mario Brothers at the Convenient store that had the cards.
By the time the bust came after '89 upper deck, I was in high school and entirely too cool to be "playing" with cards. I had a high school job then and may have been able to spend $10-$15 a day, but that went towards girls and overpaying the older guy to by beer.
I started again in 2001, and on my single card purchases, have really made out well I think. But wanting to crack some packs always gets the best of me, and I've probably spent near $5000 on boxes over the last five years. I don't think I've ever pulled a card worthwhile, so I'm way behind.
If I tried to sell my collection all at once, I'd probably get $3000-$4000, especially if it was to the right person. All the game used and auto's I've kept is Colts and Reds stuff, so if someone liked the same stuff as I do, I might get a premium. But at that price, I'd basically be giving my 100 psa cards away at $30 to $40 per, and everything else away for free.
That would include the hundreds of shiny cards numbered to 1500 that I pulled from $12 a pack stuff that might sell for a quarter. If I could stay away from wax, I'd be doing much, much better.

My whole collection is probably worth about $15K maybe $20K, but I'll be fertilizer before anyone sees a nickel of that money. I have no clue how much I've spent since 1980, but a big chunk of what I have spent has come in the last couple of years throwing cash at Heritage and now Allen & Ginter.
Oh, I've also spent divorce-type money on my 1976 Topps set.
Collector of Pittsburgh Pirates cards for a slightly less stupid reason.

Cards, I must have spent close to that much as well
