Is this common?

I just got back from my local coin shop and there was a guy standing in line to get in. Now he drove a 1974 datsun that had more S$#@ in his car than I have in my garbage can at home. It had a busted out window in the back and looked like it was worth maybe 200.00. Now the guy was Hugh about 400lbs and dressed like his car. He went directly to the counter that had the gold eagle’s etc and laid out almost 4,000 in cash before he went on his shopping spree. He was asking the lady behind the counter these types of questions.

Is that raw? Are these slabbed or are they raw? Pointing directly at the coins. He said I will take one of those pointing at the 1/2 ounce raw gold eagle, and one of those pointing at a MS63 1921 NGC peace dollar. He said hum I have some money left over and how much are those and are they raw or graded. Pointing at all the Morgans and Peace dollars she had. He said do you have 3 or 4 at 75.00 each or so that is all they money I have left.

He did not care about the grade or the date of the coin he just wanted to know how much they were. Had no clue of the value or?

Is this common in most coin shops?

I about fell off my feet and I was in there buying silver eagles at 12.50 a piece for a grand total of 85.00 and some change.

Unlike Russ, I think I’d steer clear. He may well have been doing some money laundering.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Nah, money launderers drive nicer cars. Years from now when this guy croaks we'll be reading a newspaper story about a pauper whose house was stuffed with millions in collectibles and cash.

The only guys that I see like that around my local shop are headed to the check cashing place. Or Der Weinerschnitzel.

I just thought of it as kind of stange because when I made my purchase I asked the lady if this was common. Her reply...Nothing but please provide your pin number. She did not say anything when he left to the owner in the back except I need to leave for about 5 minutes and I will be right back. I would have thought one or both would have said something to each other about that first sale of the day?

  • I've seen this type of thing before as well. But never in a coin shop. Anytime I've seen it, it usually involved Gambling, in some form anyway.
