Newbie PCGS Grading Submission question

Hello all,

Been reading and learning here for a while........time to come out image

Quick question for the veterans of PCGS, can you submit a coin for grading in its original US Mint acrylic holder or must they be removed and placed in a mylar flip prior to submission?? I am in process of my first round of direct submissions and thought I'd read somewhere that if it was in original Mint packaging that was OK, but can't seem to find it again.

Thanks in advance -
Roger

Welcome! In answer to your question, I've sent proof coins (1964 and earlier) in their original mint packaging, and they graded them. Don't know about the later ones in the hard plastic.image

leaving them in the "airtite" holder only eliminates one more set of hands on them, always a good thing. You won't get the airtite back, but then again you'll have your coin in a permanent slab. My first submission was nine proofs in airtites. Graded out to 3 70's and 6 69's. I would slip the airtite into the mylar flip that PCGS sells. This insures that once they remove it from the airtite it has a safe resting spot while being processed. Good Luck!

  • Hi Roger, and good to hear from you. I also did a good deal of lurking before I decided to jump into the fray......you have already found that there is a lot of knowledge here, as long as you know where to look.image

I have sent Canadian coins to PCGS in various original holders (after calling pcgs to get the thumbs up) - and the last submission even had the original holders returned to me, which I didn't expect. I don't know what I'll do with them, but it was nice of pcgs to send them back.
