Excel Spreadsheet with auto price updating avail for free soon...

Hi there,

I've read many posts on coin collecting software and MANY of you have responded that excel spreadsheets are more flexible and the best to use. I agree with you. I am wondering if some of you would do me a favor and send me the spreadsheet you use? My e-mail address is: image Also if anyone has made an excel sheet based on the one (another forum member made a while back) that pulls the values from the PCGS price guide, that would be awesome as well to send to me.

I will take all the spreadsheets you send and compile what I consider to be the "best" coin collecting spreadsheet possible.

I have been working with excel for a number of years and have made some advanced spreadsheets in the past.

I look forward to the challenge and appreciate your response in the form of your excel spreadsheets to: image

Thanks,

Jason Fox

    Jason,

No disrespect, but if you "[i...]have been working with excel for a number of years and have made some advanced spreadsheets in the past. then creating a spreadsheet of your own should be a snap.
Using someone else's work so you can 'compile' them & call it your own just seems wrong.

    Welcome, Jason.

I'm not sure what the suspicion is here, other than that nobody knows you and you've only posted here once.

I would suggest that if you want to create a tool for all of our benefit, out of the goodness of your heart, that you look at the My Heritage function at http://coins.heritageauctions.com/info/prices.asp

You will need to sign up; it is a pretty decent way to upload and track a collection.

Why don't you take a little time and introduce yourself, and let us know a little more about why you are making this generous offer.

    Again, welcome.
  • To the can of SPAM guy... Please remove your post, this isn't spam.

To everyone else: I have made many excel sheets for my own use and distributed them for free for all sorts of things.

If anyone is interested see: this excel real estate investment spreadsheet I made

I'm interested in doing this for myself and will give you all the sheet when I'm done... Its a win win.

    Thanks, Jason

Whoever you are do not send me another pm and yes it is spam.

  • Listen up trouble maker... What part of my post made you even think it was SPAM in the first place? I'm not selling anything, in fact I'm offering my time to this community for FREE.

I would appreciate it if you would kindly remove your can of SPAM from post #2.

    Thank you.

    Sure you are. Nice try.
  • WTF is wrong with you?

Did you look at the real estate investor calc, sheet I made? I've made many sheets in my spare time. Why do you insist on being illogical?

What is your problem with me?

I suspect it's that you are soliciting (even if not apparently selling something) with your very first post here. Regardless of motive, history tells us that usually when this happens, someone is spamming, trying to direct us to their web site or trying to (overtly or indirectly) sell us something.

    Just sayin'.
  • I can understand that on a first post. But, I also have been collecting a LONNG time and reading this forums on and off for 2-3 yrs.

It just pisses me off to see a can of spam when thats not my intention at all.

I EVEN PUT MY PHONE NUMBER IN MY POST.... DO SPAMMERS DO THAT?

    Anyways...

Dude, chill out. You come here with no history, no participation at all and tell an active participant in the forum to edit a post???

No one knows your motivation - it's not like you uploaded a spreadsheet and said "have at it". You request copies of other peoples' work based on a promise that you will create something better... But you have no credibility. Then you get mad that no one takes you for the great guy that I'm sure you are.

Like I said, let people here get to know you a little - if you are really into coins, post smoething.

    Just an idea.

  • Not too be rude but I don't have time to get THIRTEEN THOUSAND POSTS on this message board like mrnearlygold.

If anyone is interested in sharing their work, like slipgate did, then I am highly appreciative of your work.

Slipgate, your work is what I was refering to in my 1st post. Thanks for your time and knowledge.

I used to have a rudementary excel sheet I made but that was 5+ years ago when I only collected pennies and odds and ends.

I have a lot of newer clad stuff 65+ along with many proof sets now and I'd love to be able to auto fill the current values.

The goal of this whole thread is simply to have people share with me and then share back when I'm finished.

If you think I'm going to steal your work then either call me and discuss or simply DON'T SHARE ANYTHING.

But To those who insist on ruining a good thread by posting cans of SPAM - I SAY YOU ARE UNKNOWINGLY IMMATURE A**HOLES!

To everyone else: Thanks for your time and hopefully for your help.

Stop sending PMs, chump. You are rude and got a lot of nerve to be ordering people around on this board.

And I am certainly not interesting in anything that simply plagiarizes others work, whether you have a hidden agenda or not.

Give foxfunding a break, while the replies so far have been hostile they did not seem to star with him, the intentions seem sincere. Before claiming spam maybe ask for a little history of what he has done in coins etc... and see if he comes through.

FoxFunding, it is reasonable to beleive you have been watching for awhile since I have not seen the excel sheet that grabs PCGS values for at least a year. Maybe it would help if you listed some ideas you have on what you would like to see this spreadsheet do.
  • richardshipprichardshipp Posts: 5,647 ✭✭✭
I'm still new here too but your first post did seem out of place JMHO.

In the chance that you are sincere then I'd still have some concern. Can you address this concern for me?

If your skilled in Excel spreadsheets then you are aware that any such sheet with macros in it would present a risk of containing viruses and or other unpleasant things. How could you be sure that you wouldn't receive a file with a hidden virus? It sounds as if your doing this from you work; and if you have a network there, the whole system could be at risk.

Once your "new sheet" is done and ready for distribution; the potential end-users would take the same risks. How could you alleviate their concern?

    Thanks,
    Richard

I disagree - I think that they are very knowing. image

Ya know Jason, there is smoething called bad netiquette - part of which is jumping in the middle of a forum asking for stuff before you contribute anything or make yourself known.

Since you have not responded directly to any of my posts, I suppose that my input has fallen on "deaf ears".

I want to believe that you want to contribute... But who knows? You are an unknown.

You may just want to grow a little bit thicker skin if you want to do it your way.

    Repectfully, Keith

  • BECOKA, Thanks for your input, to answer your questions:

Here's what I want to do:

I want to track my entire collection by coin, date, mint mark, composition, purch. price, purch. date, and many more fields tbd.

Along with that, I want to have graphs and pricing info. I also want to track collection and ind. coin values over the years.

Those are my ideas now, but I'm sure the project will GROW!!!

My real estate sheet grew from very basic to what it is now, that one has been going for a few years.

    Thanks,

    Jason
  • The idea is great. Maybe a better approach would be to actually put something together and post it here for others to evaluate.
Then if things seem on the up and up, i bet you'll get many suggestions and helpful comments to perfect the sheet(s)

Man! Some of you people need to lay off the morning caffeine!

Jason, that is a pretty good start,

Folks around here take awhile to get used to. My suggestion would be to take your ideas and start a beta spreadsheet. In the mean time either start or reply to some posts so people get to know you.

When the beta sheet is available I would then post it and that would be a great time to ask for additional input or samples that others have done.

    Just my 2 cents.

Do we always have to jump on everyone on these boards.

Try Covey...seek first to understand then be understood.

We all (inlcuding myself) could take one step back before jumping in.

That said, FoxFunding has not endeared himself by jumping all over folks either.

If you took the time to look at his real estate spreadsheet, it's actually pretty good.

I never looked at your spreadsheet, but I have little doubt that your intentions were born of good will.

    FYI-

    Macro Virus

Macro viruses infect files that are created using certain applications or programs that contain macros. These include Word documents (DOC extensions), Excel spreadsheets (XLS extensions), PowerPoint presentations (PPS extensions), Access databases (MDB extensions), Corel Draw etc.

A macro is a small program that a user can associate to a file created using certain applications. These mini-programs make it possible to automate series of operations so that they are performed as a single action, thereby saving the user from having to carry them out one by one.

When a document containing macros is opened, they will automatically be loaded and may be executed immediately or when the user decides to do so. The virus will then take effect by carrying out the actions it has been programmed to do, often regardless of the program's built-in macro virus protection.

There is not just one type of macro virus, but one for each tool: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Access, Corel Draw, Lotus Ami Pro, etc.

    Anyways,

I'll be working on this on my own since no one has sent me anything except for slipgate who made his stuff available to everyone.

Please contribute if you would like to help.

I WILL get back to you all with a "rough draft" when I have some free time.

    Thanks guys,

  • There is no spam here.

New guy has some enthusiasm about setting up an Excel sheet to track coins.

He asks for examples and then offers to take all of the fields and make one spreadsheet that contains all of the useful fields and share that with the forum.

This seems to confuse some of the CU Forum members, so they don’t know what to do.
