I bid on a coin on eBay once. I knew I was going to own the coin. My bid was about 100x the value of the coin just to make sure. The question was how much was I going to pay? I ended up winning the coin for the opening bid...zero competition.

a number of times: ebay, Heritage online, Heritage floor, and other auction companies. Hit my max in those cases only once.

wow does that sound DANGEROUS. I guess worst case if if you commit to 100xs the value of the coin, just dont pay and take the neg !

Knowing what Cladiator collects, my guess is he bid 100x times the value of an unattributed half dime (type value). His bid more likely reflected the value of the coin as an attributed half dime.

In the small images, it looks pretty good. I was not impressed with the larger images. It doesn't do anything for me. There's better specimens out there.

I've done a few nuclear snipes, and won every time. One of these days I'm going to run into another nuker, and it'll be painful...

EDIT: ER, that avatar is going to get you bammed image !

    No.

Auctions drive me nuts for that reason. If I want something I'm often a pretty strong bidder, sometimes too strong. That's why I prefer shows. You buy it; you pay for it; end of subject.

And there's the recent auction when I sent in my bids, clearly typed over the Internet and the auction house fail to execute them properly, which resulted in my losing a lot I REALLY wanted. image No, I'm not a fan of auctions.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Sure. And about half of the time I get it and half of the time somebody outbids me with an "insane" bid. I guess my definition of an "insane" bid is any bid higher than mine on a lot I really want to win.
