Favorite Card Design of All-Time??

I am sure it has been asked before, but what is your favorite card design regardless of the sport.

For me I think it has to be 85-86 Topps/OPC Hockey, simple but like the way it was done with the team logo!!

  • For me the best design is the 53 Bowman Color - I would love to some day have the wallet to back up my love of this set. Also partial to 1985 Topps Football.
Just glad to be here with everyone.

I would say I'm partial to the 1955 Topps - very pleasing graphically. Too bad it never had a Mantle!

I really like the '55 Bowman with the TV screen look. Seems to be very representative of that time in our history, TV becoming so prevelant, etc....

I cannot pick just one. So, by decade...

1955 Topps All-American football (great design)
1962 Topps Football (great design -- tough black borders)
1977 Topps Baseball (first as a kid --- vibrant colors)
1982 Topps Football (brought the logos back to Topps NFL cards)
1990 Leaf (black writing on "high tech silver")
2006 Topps Baseball (brought back the cartoon on the back!)
    Enjoy your collection!

  • That is tough. I love many of the 50s and 60s cards. I am also very partial to the late 40s and early 50s Bowman cards. If I had to name some off the top of my head: 52 Bowman, 56 Topps, 60 Topps, 65 Topps, and 75 Topps. When it comes to football 85s are pretty sweet.

Always looking for interesting Don Mattingly and New York Yankees related items.

Forgot to mention. I was limiting myself to just baseball. The only other non-BB design I can think of that I really love is the '79-80 Topps/OPC Hockey. With or without the Gretzky rookie, this is just a fabulous looking set, althought the blue borders make it almost as tough as the '71 Topps BB to find in high grade.
  • Almost any Bowman and Topps from before 1957, 62 Topps and 75 Topps.

Can anyone tell me how Topps came up with that 1958 design after 4 straight beautiful designs? The '58s look like something my daughter would have drawn up (no offense to 58 collectors) -

  • 52 topps.
71 and/or 73 topps has great pics from munson to clemente. love all those.
84 donruss amazing head shots and the little stripe at bottom is great.
90 leaf. one said early the silver and black was sharpe.

60's70's Bk it tough. even though david thompson and erving 76-77 "oversized" are very nice. i'm going with...
74-75. you have great action shots and all your stars and rcs through aba and nba with lots of colors.
Star 84-86 it's just that nice looking different coating...real ones were so tough to get. I hate fake stuff. 84-85 Jordanxrc is his ugliest card too! but all the star cards are amazing.
86 fleer great action simple 80's flare.

    Fb
55 bowman. a punch in the face with color.
66 phila. in action cards to up close. Gale running. butkus in your face...the set design is nice and the feel of phila cards were better.
85 topps. sideways sharp photos to in action.
also 86 wacky green...wacky but rich in color.
89 score...great in action shots of rc's like rypien to irvin. then basic clean head shot rcs of barry to aikman. along with many colors for all teams.

Hockey...I don't remember many off the top of my head. I know they have some nice looking sets though. of course the 80's come to mind. but i know there are nicer ones in the 60's and 70's.
Jose Canseco 100 count of donruss rc's wanted for 100 bucks.

Can collectors really separate favorite card design from favorite card set? It's like NFL logos. It doesn't matter if their team's logo is crappy, it has strong associations.
  • Gotta give some love to my beloved 1950 Bowmans. 1914-15 Cracker Jacks are nice too.

I think T-3's are a slam dunk, although if we're talking about more modern sets I think I'd go with (in more or less this order)

    1) 1963 Topps Hockey
    2) 1955 Topps Hockey
    3)1967 Topps Football
    4) 1972 Topps Baseball
    5)1985 Donruss

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, but this is at least close to the list I'd put together if I really took the time to do it.

I forgot all about the T204's. Those would definitely make my list. As would the T205's, although I only 'really' like these cards in NM-MT or better (they just lose something when the corners are significantly worn), and since I don't ever anticipate owning a single one of these in that kind of condition it's kind of hard to count it.

I think so- if you'd said favorite set of all time I'd say '70 and '71 Topps, followed by '72 or '68 Topps. But I don't think any except the '71's are going to win any design awards.

As far as my favorite design, I like simple elegance: no multi-colored letters, no solid color backgrounds, no orange or yellow and definitely those cards that strongly emphasize the photo (and not a crop). So I guess that would mean 53 Bowman Color and 67 Topps. I would also add 57 Topps but wish they didn't have the multi-colored letterings.
  • My vote:
    '50s--1957
