Wow, Ax, you spent a lot of time on all those responses. I feel honored that you thought so highly of my points that you felt the need to address each of them one by one.

The Dowd report confirms all the dirt you need to know about Pete betting on his own team while manager. That is already a well known fact and if you don't think he bet on or against the Reds while he was manager of the Reds, then you are even more ignorant than most of these posters make you out to be. Yeah, ok, Rose signs baseballs apologizing for betting on baseball for no profit either. And he never bet on baseball, either, I mean, I swear I saw him on TV with Jim Gray denying that very vehemently, so you must be wrong there.

Read my post again. I'm not saying that Pete doesn't belong in the HOF for what he did on the field, only that it's entirely understandable why MLB hasn'r reinstated him in light of all this crap.

MLB owes Pete Rose nothing. The game will go on, regardless. Rose needs MLB more than they need him.

P.S. I'm still waiting for the Bucs to score a TD.

I think you all have made excellent points and somewhere in the middle is the resolution I guess.

For me? I always thought the guy wasn't very friendly - sorta like Bonds - and very egotistical.

So as a fan - I can find better people to support.

He has paid some dues - but he sure earned the right to do so.

Has be paid enough? Sure. Should he be reinstated? Why not? Hall? For sure!

He's one of the best I ever had the privilege to watch play.

But, his sins are his. His avoidance killed him. His lies killed him.

Any reference to others whether it be steroids or other criminal activities, is irrelevant to the Pete Rose issue IMO.

I agree 100%, Mike. It's no wonder you are the unofficial ambassador of these boards.

You're absolutely wrong (but then, what else is new. You're wrong about everything).

I'm still waiting for eli not to throw a 4th quarter interception.

Mike, I think it is a very rellavant issue. Cheating is cheating. I'm not saying that because one has been done then it excuses another. I just think it's a double standard based on MLB profitted from the Sosa/McGuire HR race and Barry breaking records. They didn't make a dime from Pete. Easier to overlook steroids.

Regardless if you agree with it or not, in the eyes of MLB there is nothing worse than betting on the game and especially your own team. In fact, inside every locker room there is a sign stating gambling is illegal and you will get a life-time ban if caught betting on your team.

This is nothing new and has been an enforced rule for the past 90 years.

Edited to add: I'm not saying Pete should or should not get into the Hall. If he does, great. If he doesn't, who cares. He bet on the come and rolled snake-eyes image

Ah...screw it. I just deleted my entire post.

This thing comes up every few months. No one is going to change my mind, and I'm not going to change yours.

I'm gonna go bid on some Willie Mays cards.

  • After the above pic was taken, Pete made punched Chris in the face, made a pass at his wife, asked where he could find some coke, and laid him 15-1 odds the Reds would lose that nights game......

Then charged him 100.00 for the autograph, 25.00 for each added inscription, and 20.00 for adding the name "Mike"

  • Just to respond to the "Pete Rose is a nice guy" comment, it's completely wrong.

He's actually probably THE most personable athlete I've ever met. He joked with me as he signed my ball, asked me if I played ball, and took the time to take a picture. And this was a free signing.

Pete is on and off. I've seen him surly and I've seen him affable. But in his playing days - many have not had good experiences dealing with him.

Today? IMO...life is short - everyone is OK in my book!

  • It has been widely reported that thirty baseballs signed by Pete Rose with the
inscription “I’m sorry I bet on baseball” were discovered among the Barry Halper
Collection materials which will be featured in Robert Edward Auctions’ spring
sale. These thirty baseballs have been withdrawn from auction. An offer to
purchase all thirty Pete Rose baseballs for $30,000 was made to us by ESI
Entertainment Systems Inc., a gaming service industry company from British
Columbia, Canada. REA has never before withdrawn an item from auction that has
been scheduled for auction, but in this unique instance, in light of the fact
that Pete Rose is now selling baseballs signed in an identical manner on his
website for $299, we advised our consignors (the Halper family) that it was our
opinion that this offer should be accepted. We were given the authority to
proceed in whatever manner we felt best. Our job is to make the best decisions
possible for our consignors, and we have therefore executed the sale of the
thirty baseballs to ESI Entertainment Systems Inc for thirty thousand dollars.
We apologize for any inconvenience to the hundreds of collectors who have
contacted us during the week regarding these Pete Rose baseballs, but in this
very unusual circumstance we believe that it was appropriate to recommend an
outright sale. We are confident that collectors will appreciate our thought
process, and hope that any inconvenience is more than remedied by the fact that
baseballs bearing this identical inscription can now be purchased directly from
Pete Rose at www.PeteRose.com. Please note that the buyer was made fully aware
by Robert Edward Auctions that baseballs signed in an identical manner could be
purchased directly from Pete Rose, but they specifically wanted the REA auction
examples. We wish Pete Rose all the best and we will be referring all future
(and previously received) inquiries regarding Pete Rose baseballs to
www.PeteRose.com. For information about the withdrawn thirty baseballs, which
will always have a special historical significance as the original thirty Pete
Rose balls discovered in Barry Halper’s basement, contact: ESI Entertainment
Systems Inc. (TSX:ESY), 15th Floor, 4710 Kingsway, Burnaby, British Columbia,
    Canada V5H 4M2.

    Sincerely,

    Robert Edward Auctions LLC
