Exceptionally nice surfaces for a Classic Head cent, I would say.

Grade? Uh... I dunno. I'm having trouble sorting out weak strike versus wear, based on that picture. I would say at least a high VF or an EF40?

Edit: I'll go with the "high VF". Let's say... uh... VF30.

    I guess.

VF-30 maybe 35. It is a very nice planchet for that year. Just from looking at the image, I think it's a weak strike more than wear.

Keep it....Looks like a very nice VF35 (one of my favorite grades) to me.

It will grade at PCGS or NGC IMO. I would send it to PCGS. NGC would probably try to get you to conserve it! image

Probably VF 30, though XF 40 wouldn't surprise me.

  • VF35, possibly recolored.

Somewhere in the 30-35. The nice, uniform color makes me suspicious that it may have been recolored.

That is a very nice planchet for a Classic Head LC.
I think, like most here, that it's a VF, maybe 30-ish.

If the images are accurate I think the coin has been cleaned - it looks too glossy and the color is a bit off.

that is one of the best examples of a circulated classic head that I have seen, way above average planchet , color. they are almost always weak strikes this one is not bad at all. imo its a very nice vf35 I think it would slab at xf40 with pcgs though.

nice job of recoloring, but why would you want this stuck in a piece of plastic?

commercial vf-35, eac might go vf-20

Nice looking coin regardless of whatever the tpg's say...

Recolored, but not unattractive. One of the nice things about recolored large cents is that large cent collectors, as opposed to collectors of other types of coins, are much more receptive to purchasing/accepting recolored coins. Provided the coin is priced accordingly and you like it, I see no reason why not to purchase it.

That being said, I do not think that there is much of a chance that PCGS would holder the coin, but the likelihood that NGC or ANACS would is much greater...Mike

Yep, anything in early copper that looks decent seems to have been cleaned these days. It's why so much ugly stuff is in slabs. image

EAC guys really don't give rat's tail about the cleaning or at least it's such a big deal as it seems to be with the grading services. If you like the coin, the price is not out of line and you don't care about slabs or registry, this coin might be OK for you. These pieces (Classic head cents) are really hard to find nice with deceny eye appeal.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
