Guess The Grade: Bust Half Dime - Grade Revealed

The pics are big but they are worth it so give it some time. What do you think she grades? Any other comments on the coin and it's condition are welcome of course. MrHalfDime, Barndog and JrGman2004 have all seen this coin I believe so they probably shouldn't put in a grade guess but are more than welcome to see if they can attribute it.

quick guess is 1833 LM-3.3 -- clash marks through date, back to the sick baby now!

AU 58, I think. I see some wear in the high points of the obverse (Liberty's cap and curls) and also (although to a lesser degree) on the tops of the eagle's wings on the reverse.

I like the colours. And the clash is very nice.

Barndog nailed the attribution as the LM3.3. I was (and still am) a bit confused at the large range of grades given. I'd like to say that anyone who graded this coin in XF, please sell me as many XF half dimes that you can find

This is one instance where I believe the grade on the PCGS label on a Bust half dime is actually accurate. My personal grade and the PCGS grade of this coin is AU58.

i think you better look at the price difference between xf-45 & au-58! based on THAT digi-pic, that coin is nowhere even remotely close to unc, which is what "58" means

A bust half dime is about the size of a man's thumbnail. Unless I am mistaken, we don't assign grades to a coin based upon viewing a coin under 16x magnification, I thought it was more like 4x-5x. Cladiator's coin is a lock 55 every day of the week, and in my opinion, it would grade 58 three out of four times it was submitted. I've seen his coin and it is very attractive. If his coin were an XF, you would not see the shaft on the arrowheads on the reverse, you would not see the beautiful and generally unmarred wing feathers, talons, and crest of the eagle's head, you would not see a very strong/pronounced drapery line along the bust, you would not see so many high hair details, and you would not see such nice stars on the obverse. 55 all day every day, 58 3/4 of the time in front of a professional grader.

As for price difference, there is virtually none for a 55 vs. a 58 capped bust half dime. I'd expect a common die marriage in a PCGS holder with no notable toning would be a $275-$350 coin in AU-58. Take $10-$25 off that price for a 55. These price levels assume rational sellers and buyers.

ps: in grades above xf, these coins should be graded based on remaining luster. is it possible your digi-pic does a crappy job of displaying luster? if so, that may be misleading. i'm only seeing less then maybe 10% of remaining luster, which in no way grades au.

i cant find the revealed grade but it has to be higher than an XF looks damn near unc to me. how could anyone think a high grade bust coin could have any "brilliant" luster ?? its not gonna shine like an MS 1921 morgan dollar the luster is there, its just under 150 years of natural tarnish, a beautiful coin no matter what the grade

For the record here are side by side comparison pics. One of the coins is the AU58 from this thread and the other coin is my XF 1832 LM11.2. In my opinion these two photos clearly show what an XF should look like and what an AU should look like.
