Seriously, why dont they make a square coin?
The sides would be rounded, but you could get a lot of stuff on it, and it would be very easily recognized and could even generate interest.
I want a square coin with a "square" person on it. Mister Rogers? Liberace? Pat Boone?
Ain't a bad idea.

But I take it you mean the United States should issue a square coin. It certainly would be nifty!

<< <i>Vending machines would revolt. >>
The vending machine companies have to make their machines compatible with the coins. They tried that one with the buffalo nickel, and lost.

Square coins are for second and third world countries.
It has Queen Elizabeth on the obverse and a beaver on the back... How fitting

Coming from Dr. Evil I'll laugh with you.
They would be cool, it would be the US and I am writing a letter to the manager of the mint now.
<< <i>Triangular too. >>
They make some really cool "Bermuda Triangle" Coins.
Here is an awesome page with all sorts of cool shaped coins.

<< <i>The RCM is releasing this in the very near future.
I like that. Youo have to think "outside the box".
Let's face it....every NEW coin we have tried in the last 50 years has failed. No one uses half-dollars. Their a joke as currency goes. A square dollar would probably go over well.
You could pit SpongeBob SquarePants on it!! What a fit!
not to mention the damage if you swallowed one..

off thread topic. What are you talking about in relation to the stamp statement?

By the way, manhole covers are round for a different reason: that's the only shape you can make them so they do not fall in when rotated.
<< <i>Round coins are most efficient from a metal-flow and striking standpoint. They require the least pressure and cause the most distributed stress to the dies.

Triangular works too. We have triangular manhole covers here in Nashua.

Because they wouldn't roll under the coke machine when you dropped them. It's a conspiracy I tell ya.

You can make your manhole covers fall into the hole if rotated properly in 3 dimensions.
Steve
BLECHHHH. I'll start my own damn country and make square coins and you all will clamour for proof sets that I will charge a fortune for.

Come to think of it, you're right. The collar may be small enough to prevent it, but in principle, a triangular cover may fall through. If you're ever in Nashua, we'll give it a try, and if you can make it drop, lunch is on me. The triangular covers do have one advantage: they point in the direction of the underground flow. They're being phased out, though, as the old ones are not large enough to meet current standards, and they can't find a vendor for bigger ones.
Back to coins: I'm all for the odd shapes and sizes. The only way we'll have a chance at a dollar coin that really circulates is to make it very easy to distinguish it from other coins. The Brits will make a coin seven-sided, or unusually thick, or bimetallic; maybe that approach would work for the USA as well.
1. Because they'd have to change the cheapskate phrase, "He throws nickels around like manhole covers." (Unless they changed the shape of manhole covers.)
2. We'd have to acquire an entirely new technique for pitching pennies.
3. Paper coin roll containers would tear more easily.
4. They'd want to experiment with a less audacious choice like an octagon-shape coin first, and after that was rejected, there's no way they'd take a crazy chance with square coins.
5. "United States of America" would have to make a crazy 90-degree turn when it came to a corner and would be much harder to read.
Would get caught in a child's throat if they should swallow one!!
A coin press sends metal out in all directions from the center.
This shape is known as a circle
You can make a square from a circle, but it requires triming off the rounded edges.
So why make a circle and then waste the metal to turn it into a square?

Yes it is impossible to make it have the same area - which is why I said "So why make a circle and then waste the metal to turn it into a square?"
<< <i>I want a square coin with a "square" person on it. Mister Rogers? Liberace? Pat Boone?
Hmm, you think of Liberace as "square"? Interesting. I picture him as the portrait on a $3 bill. The reverse of course would feature a white grand piano with candelabra. You can get so much more artistic detail on paper money.
Or you could put him on the reverse of a Washington Quarter: "If only my brother George could see me now!"

This listing is very similar to a coin that was given to me by my grandfather.
Obviously not mass produced, but still kinda cool.
