Does a dealer's membership to PNG affect your decision of whether or buy from them or not?

Does a dealer's membership to the PNG (Professional Numismatist's Guild) affect your decision of whether or buy from them or not?

  • Not really for me. I buy the coins I like, no matter which dealer has them. As long as the price is right I usally buy it. Being a member pf PNG cannot be a bad thing though.

If I am unsure about working with a dealer, recognizing that he/she is a member of the PNG gives me some reassurance. From a practical standpoint, I buy 90% of my coins for my core collection from two dealers: one is a member and the other formerly was but is no longer current.

I guess if I was a dealer and didn't know if the person had any working capital behind them, the PNG membership might mean something. At least it would give me a group of people whom I could ask about the person. As a collector, however, it would have zero impact on my decision.

Not if it's something I have in my hand and can see and make a decision.

Now if it's over the PC and you are viewing a pic, etc.... It might make me feel a bit more comfortable.

I should note that the ANA is also a plus as well for dealer's to list. There is no doubt in my mind that the thought of being booted or reprimanded after I filed a formal complaint got my money back on that '22 dime.

The only thing that affects my decision to buy from a dealer, regardless of his affiliation with any numismatic club is: MONEY

PNG is as much an ehtical barometer as being an ANA member.

A few years ago, I reported a PNG member to Ebay for shilling. He was suspended for 30 days (which is a major punishment for a Powerseller.)

    Nope. Same with ANA membership.

I really don't know how to answer that. I always buy the coin I like, however; I do feel that somone who is a member of a numismatic organization is showing a more than passive interest in coins. I would be more comfortable dealing with such a person on a high powered coin. At least I would have some type of recourse if things didn't turn out to my satisfaction.

Is that an answer to your question? (Kind of a so so answer I guess).

Doesn't PNG stand for "Dinosaur Club"?
  • Yes somewhat, of course it does. One reason is the mandatory minimum return privilege period (used to be 30 days,
now it is 14 days (I think)), and the other reason is a complaint/arbitration procedure with teeth...

It also shows, generally, professional status, as the entry requirements aren't easy.

But, in balance, I buy coins, and not membership associations.

There are some wonderful dealers who belong to the PNG, and I've dealt with some of them for years. There are a few that would never get my trust or my business because I either had a bad experience or did not care for the way they did business.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Sounds like you've had some bad experiences. Care to share with us (without mentioning names)?

Yes. It's an obvious positive. However, not being a PNG member won't stop me from buying a nice coin priced right when all other factors look good.

I think if I were a newbie looking to spend big bucks or sell a collection about which I knew very little, I would favor PNG dealers. However, I'm not a newbie.

Still, I have a little more respect for PNG dealers than non-PNG dealers, for two basic reasons. First, they have agreed to binding arbitration in the event of a dispute, which to me says something about their integrity. Second, they care enough about the hobby/business to financially support the PNG's work in promoting numismatics.

That extra respect may not directly translate into more business for the PNG dealer, but it certainly counts for something.

no, but the lack of ANA membership by a dealer does...
  • Not really... there's just as many screwballs in PNG as there are in ANA or not affiliated with anyone... it's just that with PNG and ANA, if you get screwed, you got more possible paths for recourse...

It adds a little bit to my decision if I have not dealt with the dealer before. However, personal reputation, and the views of board members' past experiences with a dealer, carry more weight for me.
