Which would you rather own: Gold Buffaloes or 20th Anniversary Gold???

Proof Buffalo Gold Mintage 300,000 or

20th Anniversary Gold Mintage 10,000-30,000

You pay a little more for the 20th Anniversary, but if past history is any indicator, these could be big winners.

Both...but I sold buffalos to buy 20th sets. They look rarer based on the mintages you posted. --Jerry
  • I own both. Amazingly, these are the first gold eagles i have ever purchased. For that matter these are the first gold buffaloes i have ever purchased. image

That one is the one that will really be in demand. This one will probably sell for $1,000 or more in the aftermarket, assuming $600 gold.

I'd say the odd Mint Marks (Uncirculated piece with the "W" mint mark) and the one-sided Proof might make the 10 anniversary set a winner. Also sets with mintages of 10,000 or less in the modern series have tended to hold their value or increase in value.

The silver set with a mintage of 250,000 might not be so lucky.

    Bill,

You are probably right. In any case, $100 on the silver sets can't go down too awefule much. One of the gold wins, and you'll make up quickly for any loss on the silvers.

But in any case lets hope you are wrong and they all go up in value!!!image

Just ordered 1 AE Gold proof and 5 AE Silver proof sets.

The 10,000 limited quantity of AE Gold coin set is a winner; furthermore, the reverse proof and bunished uncirculated gold AE are unique until now.

I intend to give out some of the AE Silver sets as gifts to my friends.

The Mint overcharges us (collectors) on the AE Gold set because the Uncirculated AE gold shouldn't cost as much as $800 per coin [($800x1) + ($905x2) = $2610)].

But I am glad I have at least one set to keep in my collection.

    Does anyone knows if:

The 2006 AE Gold bullion Uncirculated has any mint mark?

The AE Silver Proof has "W" mint mark on the back of the coin?

If so, the coins that are unique from these sets would only be the "AE reverse proof Gold and AE reverse proof silver".

As I understand it 2 of the six coins in the two sets will be available outside the sets. These are the normal proofs.

On the Silver Eagles, the normal proof mintage is large and this coin from the set does not appear to be special. The W Mint Mark Burnished Uncirculated will be limited to 270,000 (250 in A10 plus 20 in A11). The reverse proof will be limited to 250,000.

On the gold eagles, the noral proofs will have 10K in A12, plus 12K as 1 ounce singles, plus 25K in the 4 coin proof set. The W Mint Marked Burnished Uncirculated will be limited to 30,000 (20K in A11 and 10K in A12). The reverse proof will have only 10K.

I'd rather not own either if I had to pay for them. If a gift, I'd take either and sell on ebay.
  • the new gold buffalo coins have less impurities or should I say alloying elements. If you follow that logic, would'nt that make them better than old gold coins. image

As far as I know, the only uncirculated Eagles that have a "W" mint mark would be those in the anniversary sets. These will all have the "W" mint mark both proof and uncirculated.

    Yes?
    No?

  • << <i>.....the one-sided Proof..... >>

Bill, it is not a one sided proof. That's what I thought it was too until I paid attention to the wording. It's a reverse proof, not a proof on the reverse. I bet there are more peeps getting this mixed up.

  • The 20th anniversary set!!!!!
  • I expect the Uncirculated "W" and Reverse proof will become semi-keys in the ASE series. 1995-W definitely remains the key overall, but as far as Uncirculated mintages, I believe we now have one well lower than 1996.

...and to have a full Unc ASE set, you have to have a 2006-W...

These sets certainly will not lose value.

    Not particularly interested in either.
  • So what will the PF70DCAMs go for for the Reverse proof? The 2006 Bisons go for $2500 or more.

That was my understanding also. But information does not seem very clear cut at this time.... I've seen it worded differently in different places. I think there will be more than just 2 desirable coins in all of the unc and proof options. Looks to me that any of the sets will be a winner.

Oh, and to answer the original question----- the anniversary gold is a no-brainer!! I will be picking up my Buffalo gold at a much cheaper price than the anniversary gold will be at in the future..... but that is from the financial aspect.

I wonder if PCGS will be slabbing "First Strikes" for the anniversary sets after the mint published it's denunciation of the practice.

The only non-winner will be the 2006-W regular proof. With the regular mintage of around 750,000 and the 250,000 for the 3-piece sets, that gets close to 1 million. That coin will be a dog for years. These sets are going to be broken up heavily, in my opinion.
  • That's a trick question--they are both modern crap!!

I wonder if the mint will do a 10 year platinum set next year. I better start saving up
