Just got turned away at a Dealer's shop

No. I wasn't wearing my "I Love VAMs" t-shirt. I had a loupe in my pocket and few hundred bucks in cash.

New shop in the area. The permanent sign reads "BUY & SELL COINS", and they have a folding sign on the sidewalk showing "BUYING & SELLING COINS".

Stopped by two months ago. They had just opened, had no inventory, and was told to "come back in a couple weeks". This was understandable.

I gave them a month. Unfortunately they weren't open during their posted business hours and my second visit failed.

Now it's been two months since they opened. I just took an hour off of work and burned up three gallons of gas. I was told "we're just stockpiling stuff right now. Should be selling soon.". What the %#@*? He told me they had lots of stuff, but they were holding on to it. What's up with the "selling" sign? I told him I'd check back in a year or so. He replies "come back in a couple weeks".

Some folks know the "vt" in my userid is for Vermont. This place is NOT Tim's new shop (VTcoins). Tim has already sent me a couple of PM's with invites to come to his shop and search through his inventory. I hope to take him up on it during my next visit through Rutland. He seems to actually buy and SELL.

I wouldn't expect too much from a shop like this. Quality sellers usually have quality customer service. We see new businesses opening up in all areas that don't have a clue, they don't last long.

OTOH, if you can get there when they start selling you might find some real bargains if they are indeed clueless. Take more cash just in case.

I do all my coin shoppinb via motorcycle. Much less gas, zip thru traffic, and coin's are never too big to fit in the side cases.

    Good luck,

Many shops are collectors in disguise. They use the shops to buy for themselves.

Usually those types of dealers want full retail and then some.

They probably saw you coming and said here's a guy who knows his stuff.

Don't think I'd make a trip back anytime in the near future.

I have plenty of coins on display for sale and we are always here during our posted hours. I'm usually here during our closed hours too!

The new place up in Burlington may be set up as a "buy" location. With gold and silver high, I imagine they have a lot of people coming in to sell. I've never met the people who set up this new shop, so they may be fairly new to the business.

I'm going to get myself in trouble. Forgot there was a new place in Burlington too. The place I was refering to is in Essex Junction.

Many shops simply buy and sell metals and coins are included. We have a few of these nearby. They're hardly ever open and when they are the owners are more knowledgeable with regard to metals than coins. Prices they ask for coins is out of sight!

It has been my experience that there are many retail (and I use the term loosely) coin shops which are there only to buy--not to sell to the public. They then wholesale it off to bigger dealers.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

That was my thought too, only I was wondering about a drug front. If it is a drug front and pick me up something good!

Stockpiling huh? Next time by ask if he has a need for a couple of hundred circulated IKE's that I need to, uh, dispose of! image

I don't know that I would bother with another visit.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
