Metal detector HELP!

I am looking to purchase a good metal detector. I want it mainly for gold prospecting but I may also be using it for other things. I want to keep it close to $200-$300. I heard the Garrett 250 was good for this kind of use. I am clueless about metal detectors. I am open to a more expensive one if I can try to find it cheaper on EBAY. I had one of those garbage ones you find at Radio Shack and it was horrible! I don't want to make the same mistake. I want one that will grow with me. Any help/discussion would be greatly appreciated.
