I heard from Don ( he has access to the internet at a neighbor's ). The family is safe and "sound" and the three kids are staying at relative's homes nearby. The house is in ruins. First floor is full of silt - muck & mire - and no power. The second floor bedroom area is untouched - except for the mold which will have to be taken care of professionally.
Its times like this that test a man's fortitude.
We're all pulling for you, Don & Nancy !
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Thank you to everyone for your support, and for Mike Hayes being the communication hub. We are all doing well, no rain for a week! and trying to keep focusing on the positives. Alot has been accomplished this week so there is encouragement. I miss checking here daily, but hopefully won't be too long before back with the rest of you Barber crazies. God bless,
Don
Do your best to avoid circular arguments, as it will help you reason better, because better reasoning is often a result of avoiding circular arguments.
My thoughts are with you as well. I hope things get more settled and back to normal for you soon. Having done disaster loans for a few months after the Northridge Earthquake and Norhern California a few years back for the SBA I know how devastating these natural disasters can be. It's a tremendous challenge putting things back together.
Peter, that is an awesome 09-O. I love the original color. Congratulations.
I have a question to throw out to the group.
MS versus high grade say solid VF to AU halves. While on the surface there seems to be just as much rarity if not more for the higher graded circulated pieces which I love a great deal, wouldn't it be likely there are a lot of ungraded VF - AU coins out there in folders and albums, which for economic and financial reasons haven't been graded as oppossed to MS halves?
The biggest challenge of course is to still find original coins. It seems maybe one out of 50 or 100 from F2 to MS65 have not been messed with in some way. I looked through probably 400 Barber halves at a recent show here in Sactown and bought an MS coin, which was a duplicate that had beautiful toning and 7 circulated coins. Sadly once I got the circulated coins under "home lighting" I wish I had passed on 3 of those as problems cropped up that I couldn't see under the show lighting. It was nice to have a lot to look through though.
I think I will post the above question in it's seperate thread as well.

I bought my first Barber half last weekend, but I've noticed the same on the coins I looked at before.
BTW, is the guy on the coin supposed to be Greek or Roman?
With regards to VF - AU Barber halves still being in albums and such, vs mint state Barber halves, this may be true to a certain extent. With the popularity of Barber halves in the VF - AU grades, and the subsequent higher prices that they're currently bringing, I would venture to guess that the vast majority of truly original Barber halves in this grade range have already been certified. This is especially true for those coins with above average eye appeal.
The exception to this might be a collector who is working on a fine or VF set and wants to display them in a Dansco album. In this case, both raw and certified coins may be purchased for his/her set, only to crack out the certified coins later on.

If I had it my way, stupidity would be painful!
