Another Barber Half Post ...Serious post...page 3

MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭
Yeah, I know alot of my fellow collectors don't like them, but for those of us who do... here's another I just

won at auction at DLRC...its a tough date with a decent strike and I'm quite pleased with the coin, even

though I think NGC was 5-10 points too generous with its grade...I like the coin but disagree with the grade:

image

imageimage

Received this coin on Friday, and the caramel color referred to below is actually golden toned luster ! The strike is weak for a Barber half, but that's to be expected for a 1902-O, I would grade the coin XF 40, but because of the amount of luster remaining, I believe NGC bumped the coin to a XF 45 for that reason alone. The reverse is better struck than most 02-O's I've seen.

That is a nice one. I was following it myself. I forgot that it ended tonight, oops.

Also, I did not want to upgrade one of my favorite coins.

I like it - nice coloring to it - almost a caramel?

    Very nice!

I picked this one up tonight:

Nothing spectacular or great, but it's a Barber with the colors I like image
  • Mike:

Your coin looks like a legitimate XF-40. The reverse detail is all there, and while the obverse is a little weak, New Orleans barber
    halves are known for that.

The only problem with Barber Halves is that they

are so darn hard to find in VF-XF grades.Especially

with nice surfaces and color that has not been messed with.

I was watching both the 02-O (with the neat sawdust imprint on the cheek) and the 14-S. Great coloring. Both are very nice coins. I agree with you Mike. NGC has been dead on or 1-2 grades lower then PCGS. I've had only one NGC coin grade higher at PCGS and anyone could have told the coin was undergraded.

    Nice pickup gentlemen.

    Craig,

With the lax grading going on with NGC Barbers, I'm pleased to see that PCGS is still holding the line of "old fashioned grading".

I also won an 1896-P in an NGC 35 holder on Ebay - whose image is too large to post here - and the coin is at best a VF 30...even the seller mentioned the coin was a VF 30. The label/insert says VF 35 though.

Both of these new additions are nice original coins and I bought the " coins and not the holder" as the saying goes.

    Stan,

Nice 14-S...ya have to love that "cameo" look. Reminds me of the look of my 1907-P.

Irv Reichel has some wonderful Barber Halves on Ebay now...anyone interested in some really nice coins should check out his selections - an unsolicited comment on my part - sorry to offend anyone.

Mike - Great half and David Lawrence even commented in print how difficult the 1902-O was to find in original XF grades. PCGS usually tacks on an additional 5 grading points for those notoriously weakly struck middle O mint dates in the Barber series (except for my solid XF40 1898-O they graded VF35??).

PCGS graded this 02-O an XF45, and you can see the weaker strike in the shield area. The wingtip ends are 3-D, hmmmm....AU50??

You know, I am going to check my collection tonight, but if that is one of the duplicates I sold off a few months back, I am going to cry. image

    Tyler,

That coin sure matches most of mine in XF45 and yours is a beaut. I have your 98-O VF35 in to PCGS right now for a regrade. Should know in a couple of weeks.

I agree. It looks 35-40ish to me, but is a very handsome coin, indeed.

    Mike,

I like that coin a lot. I have no problem with the 45 grade considering the date and mint mark and typcial strike. It looks very original with remaining light dirt and I would love to have a matched set with that look. It has a lot of "meat" to it.

Also recently saw your post on the 09-O quarter and can't agree more that it is a real tough and sleeper date in the quarters.

    edited for typos.

I'm getting darn excited to completing my set so I can get them Tru-viewed and have Phil make me a Poster with all the coins on it. Will look sweet in my office.

    Peter,

I've been playing with Barber Halves in mid range grades for just over a year now, after completing my AU set. I now have countless duplicates in most dates and have a wide selection of coins to pick and choose from...all major TPG's are represented. I'm still at a loss as to why I'm missing the 93-S in VF/XF image...this could be the hardest of all the halves to locate. Although I see a few other collectors are fortunate enough to locate an example, I'm still searching. I also had a problem locating one in AU as well.

I added a few new things to my second set of Barber Halves with Varieties. No images yet, sorry. Once I actually receive another coin I traded for, I'll post that image.

Hope someone else keeps this thred active.

  • Great pickup Mike. I see that you've been quite active with your collecting since I've been away on vacation.

Currently this tread is not showing the larger images of the 02-O, but from what I can see of the smaller obverse image, the coin has a very nice look to it. From what I've read.........the 02-O is notorious for having one of the weakest strikes in the series, hence the overgrading by NGC by perhaps 5 to 10 points.

Coin just arrived today. Gotta love those original Barbers.

Just sold this coin to Don Soles as he coveted it more than I did.
Its now posted in his Registry set, and I located another in PCGS 30,
which I like almost as well as this XF 40.

  • ARCOARCO Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yes Mike, your 1914 is a real beauty. As the lowest mintage date in the series, the 1914 has had a huge price increase in all circulated grades. It may be the fastest appreciating coin in the series because of its low mintage numbers attracting non-Barber collectors and hoarders buying low mintage dates. I am of the opinion that the 92-O and the 1914 will be the two most popular coins in the series (they attract type and single date collectors) and will always experience the best appreciation and value over time.

Just to keep this thread alive - as Barber Threads are few and far between - here are a couple of odds and ends I just picked up:

    imageimageimageimage

The ANACS XF 40 is scheduled to be cracked out for my Dansco Album.

The PCGS coin is a filler for my 1st tier set until an AU 55-58 becomes available or my NGC 63 crosses at PCGS.

On a serious note; I just received an email from another Barber collector, Don Soles ("Umakem" on the Registry ) and INYEWHWETRUST here on the Boards.

Don and his family live on the Virginia eastern shore ( 50 miles in land ) and in a matter of 20 minutes his basement became flooded with seven feet of water; due to 12 hours of rain creating 18" of a downpour. His house is nearly lost, and as he is not in a "Flood Zone", therefore is no flood insurance.

Words alone can not convey my feelings. My heart goes out to him and his family. Its a shock when it happens to some one you know and care about.

I'm sure all of us feel his pain and suffering and wish him well. Anyone with suggestions as to how to make tangable help would be greatly appreciated.

To keep this thread alive - and to make sure others had a chance to read my last post - here's another
half destined for the Dansco album, an 1894 which I just picked up Raw, and IMHO, I grade XF 40.

I'm also attaching another example, but PCGS graded AU 50:

  • Don,

I'm real sorry to hear about your flooded home and I hope you and your family are getting thru this the best you can. Keep the faith, and remember you have a bunch of "coin buddies" on these boards for a little added support or as a distraction from your current situation.

    Don,

I called Stacks and told them you won't be bidding on any Barber halves this month.

Don't sell your set...no matter how tough it seems right now. Leave them in the SDB and forget about them.
