I earned mine too; although I don't have the exact date... (291fifth). The hard part was trying to find a merit badge counsler who knew as much about coins as I did. I think I ended up showing my counsler how to grade. This is a great way to introduce someone to the hobbie, and the merit badge book has some decent information.
Is a wannabe coin collector worse than a wannabe kayaker? If so, I'm in double trouble.

My merit badge counselor gave me a copy of COIN WORLD, the first time I had ever seen a coin periodical. I immediately subscribed. I also joined a coin club (The Club of Illinois Numismatists) at that time. The coin clubs of that era were very active. I learned a great deal from the other members.
I tried to join the girl scouts, but they turned me down; just because I'm a man. What kind of reason is that? I'm thinking legal action. . The US Army gave me a home, an education, and a deep and abiding respect for a nice dry place to sleep that has running water that doesen't come from the sky. No, the Army provided none of that, they just made me realize how nice those things are. Next time you sit down in that nice recliner in your air conditioned abode, you might just want to say a prayer for those men and women who make it easy for you. Trust me, it's not an easy job they do. . jws
I earned mine back in the sixties, and I have been a collector ever since. I remember one requirement for the merit badge was to put together a birth year set. As a youngster, I couldn't afford the 1955 Franklin, so I was allowed to substitute a 1954, instead. Since then I have purchased a nice 1955, but I still have that 1954, too.
Received mine September 21, 1959. When I saw this thread I dug out my merit badge cards. A lot of good memories. Got my first merit badge in December of 1955 and received my Eagle award September 6, 1958. Boy I'm getting old.
Got mne in March or April 1972. I had ulterior motives in geting mine. I had been interested in and studying coins for year but had no money so I couldn't collect. Well my parents were always pushing me to earn more merit badges, so I suggested the Coin Collecting badge. They said OK. Well one of the requirements was to mount and identify at least 50 coins from ten different countries. I got my father to help and I got HIM hooked on collecting the foreign coins. Now that I had him collecting,I now had a source of finances for MY collection. (And yes I planned it out ahead of time.)
Condor; "be prepared". Isn't that part of being a scout? Not sure as I can't remember the pledge. Quite a devious plan though. , I'm proud of you. Have you been in recent consultation with my son?. jws
I did not. Did all the requirements but never had the nerve to check 'em off with the then-assigned counselor (long story.) I stayed in through Life rank, then moved on to other things. In the Marine Corps town of Jacksonville, NC, let's say our scoutmasters were REALLY focused on 'wilderness survival' during the Viet Nam war era. And I'm thankful for that part of the experience, one-sided as it was.

Do your best to avoid circular arguments, as it will help you reason better, because better reasoning is often a result of avoiding circular arguments.

How did you do that? You have to be 11 to be a boy scout. I believe the cub scouts has something now that you can do coin collecting to earn (They didn't when I was a cub scout), but they don't earn merit bages.
In fact when I joined the cub scouts you had to be either 8 years old or in the third grade. I started school early when I was five so I joined the cub scouts when I was 7. At 6 you shouldn't have even been in the cub scouts.
I was a boy scout, eagle scout, and earned twice as many merit badges as were required for eagle. I'm no longer affiliated with the Boy Scouts for reasons we don't need to go into here.......
I earned it in December 1971 and it also got me started in collecting. I have also put together A type set of the different Coin Collecting Merit Badge Books starting with the first in 1938. I made Eagle Scout August 1973. A year later I joined the Marines.
I earned it, but was never awarded it because my scoutmaster set his own rules. He wouldn't allow anyone to be awarded a merit badge until they had first achieved "First Class". It was right around this time that I also discovered that he was dipping into our meager till and stealing from our dues and funds we earned through newspaper drives, etc. He was also involved in some other unsavory activities - never formally accused, but I know from personal experience that they were true. I left soon after...
I attained Eagle Scout back in the Fifties.... Pretty sure I worked on the coin collecting merit badge... just do not recall if that was one I had.... I have the cards still, will have to check. Still have the picture/news article of when my buddy and I were both awarded the Eagle rank. Cheers, RickO
1968 I believe ... my second merit badge ... my first was computers (first group in our state to get that one). I still have many of the coins initially collected for that badge. Looks good on an eagle photo also !!

No, not that good a memory. When you earned a merit badge you were given a card signed and dated by the scoutmaster. I still have mine.

I know this is a really old thread, but the merit badge is still around. My son has decided to work on and earn his coin collecting merit badge.
I did in 1994

I did in the mid-sixties. I think that is when I started collecting.
My first merit badge- on the way to becoming an Eagle Scout in 1980!
Was my first, summer of ‘81
Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.
Both of my sons did.
I taught the class for our scout district for years.

I got mine in '76. That was a great time for coin collecting with the Bicentennial.
