If I could get full retail value for everything...including my old Whitman folder album coins...old "Penny Boards" and all...well, yes, I guess I would.
I wouldn't stop collecting, just concentrate on the "Box of 20" everyone says should be an end goal.
The few Family Heirlooms I possess are really not mine - per se - but merely in my collection to be passed down to future generations. Everything else is fair game.

<< <i> I would consider selling if it weren't for capital gains. Unless you sold a little at a time, over time, and under the radar. >>
This is a good point.
I would consider selling my collection if I could get retail for the coins - and use the money to upgrade to better/fewer pieces ("box of 20" for lack of a better term). People often advise here to sell on E-Bay, but that is tough when you don't have a seller's record there. I probably would be hesitant to buy from me as a new seller.
No, I already can get market... that's not to say I don't "have a price"...
I too am working on "the box of 20" concept, but I have no plans of disposing of the existing collection... if anything, I'm looking to put together an educational display.
Edit: There is some overlap of the two collections, 3 of the "box of 20" are from the "permanent collection"...

As accumulators of miscellaneous numismatic artifacts, I end up every year with boxes of stuff (like those stupid westward journey nickels) that have no real interest to me once the bloom is off the rose, once my inquisitive beady little eyes have sufficiently molested the fresh offerings. My efforts are concentrated towards my box of 20 but the closest I have come to it is 13. When those 20 are finally put together they should be quite a nice collection to behold. My next quest is a gold rush era territorial gold piece...maybe a Clark and Gruber or GASP...a Humbert in vf (WOAH, did I actually say it?). But, I'm eyeing ingots (won't fit in the box) and N.O. gold too so, patience...life is good and there are many tasty treats out there for astute hunters. After that, I'm gonna ask ER or Stuart for some cool ideas but the current effort will take a few more years me thinks. Maybe some day...I can trade my box of 20 in for one coin...'15s panpac oct.
Maybe I don't understand what "Market Value" means here. Buying and selling makes the market so whatever your collection will sell for at any point and time is the market value of your collection. Now if you mean full retail, that is entirely different. In either case the answer is no. I collect for enjoyment and the profit motive is not there. I suspect many coins will go the grave with me.
I mean retail - like if your collection is "worth" $20,000 based on recent auction results/retails sales/PCGS prices (ha) or whatever. Basically if you could get what the coins are worth in the market.
BTW: I'd sell in a second. I am really tiring of this hobby. I'd probably sell at 80% of market at this point.

Hmm. That doesn't work for my collection. A number of my prooflikes are so rare and appear on the market so infrequently that my acqisition prices likely set market prices, which would be significantly lower than what they would bring at auction. The VAM collection has no market prices for many of them. That brings up an issue that occurred to me more than once. If I was to sell the whole shooting match at auction, the saturation would not easily be absorbed by the current collector community. Most people have fairly sane and limited budgets and wouldn't be able to bid on all the pieces they would want. I am certain the prooflikes would do very well, but the varieties would be too much. Would hate to break them up and extend the bloodletting over a long time though. So, if I could get the prices the coins are worth to the people who collect them, then yes.
Yes most definitely. I am considering selling most(not all) of my collection and getting out of the hobby very soon for a while. Soon as in the next couple of months or early next year.
Depends on whose "market value" your talking about. If it's based on the PCGS price guide then absolutely I would sell. But I would then use the bulk of the money to start collecting the same series again as well as hunting down several of my former coins.
No, I collect things that are legitimately scarce or rare, and it would take years to replace them (at a much higher price, no doubt). Selling would basically un-do years of hard work.
No, I would not sell all unless I really needed the money. Some of my better coins have gone up in value faster than most other investments. If I sold them, it would cost me so much more if I wanted to own them again in the future.
No I would not...because I have just about all modern crap...I know I have some rarities in the bunch somewhere ...I bought most of my modern crap from the mint and most of it has gained in value...so No to the Question....as I ponder sets of Classic coins...I am in hopes my modern crap will someday be as valuable as those...

As a follow up to my previous reply I'd like to add that I would likely use the money to live and enjoy life during my retirement years. I've invested a considerable amount in coins over the past 20 years. I have always treated coin collecting as a hobby and not as an investment. But it's nice to see my coins have gone up in value, some considerably.
I haven't sold many coins over the years and hate to think of selling any now. But the reality of retirement and what my collection could allow me to do makes me think about it. Besides, 1) I can't take them with me, 2) no one else in the family collects coins, 3) I'm sure someone will apprecialte them as much as I have and knowing that is a comfort, 4) since no one in the family currently collects coins, selling now (or in the near future 3-5 years) eliminates the hassle of my estate having to liquidate the collection.
That's my reasoning for selliing all or part of my collection, especially while prices are still up.
And you could also still collect some coins, perhaps at a lower scale or a high grade short set. Or the selling experience might awaken a retirement career in buying and selling coins. Never know. Travel to shows as business expenses in retirement isn't all that bad.
I voted YES but its really no,...if someone gave me FULL RETAIL, I would sell most of it and start again,.....but for the most part "my collection" is just that , my collection, and its unique............................then my kids collection and so on..............

"Everyone" does not include me, so maybe less than everyone believes a box of 20 should be an end goal. Maybe a LOT LESS than everyone!
