Right Here. Amazing. Normally I would expect that orders have exceeded production quantities but they are not supposed to be making these anymore!

They aren't making them anymore, but the mint has significant quantities of older issues "in the vaults"; if you search you'll find some articles about Congress ordering them to get their house in order... you never know when they're going to flood the market...

This is very "uncool" of the Mint. I think they're idiots for playing this stupid game. Once sales are halted, remaining quantities should have been melted.

Be nice it they had some old 99 proof sets somewhere in their inventory. I know they got rid of some 1999-2000 mixed bag MS State Quarters last year.

Can we call the US Mint and complain? Aren't they just patsies in the whole process? It's like when people screamed at me when tacos went from $.49 to $.59 cents at Taco Bell, and I was the drive through operator.

That's why the backorder doesn't make any sense. With current items they make a small amount, start taking orders, ship what is on hand and everyone else gets a backorder notice.

With the 2005 silver proof sets they aren't going to be making any more and everything they are selling they already have on hand. There should be no reason for a "backorder" or delayed shipping date unless they have oversold the amount they have on hand. And in that case the ship date shouldn't keep moving back. Within a day of the first notice the item should be marked as sold out, and within two days you should be receiving a notice that they oversold and notifying you that you will be receiving a refund. (Second option would be a notice allowing you to chose between an immediate refund or a waiting list in case there are returns or cancellations. In that case choose the refund. Shipping should be too fast for cancellations which would mean what you would get on the waiting list would be reject sets.)

It's because of the nickels. The cut-off date required them to stop being sold. It was approved for them to continue sales of anything containing those nickels to use up the inventory.
