Everyone please read - charity auction - child has surgery and is doing well!!

Ok - I was sorting through my cards the other day and pulled the remaining baseball cards that I have - probably around $100 to $150 worth. The cards consist of late 1970's to late 1980's cards, mostly being semi-stars and stars. Instead of selling the cards, I want to auction them off on this forum. I have contacted the adoption agency that my wife and I adopted our daughter through and they are sending a list of children that need surgery. After our trip to get our daughter, my group (about 14 families) donated $500 to fund a cleft palate surgery for a little boy. After I get the name of the child who we will sponsor, I'll post the child's picture on the boards and offer periodic updates as to his/her progress.

My thought is that each entry will cost $5 and I need a total of $510 ($500 to donate plus $10 for my shipping costs) so I'll need a total of 102 people to buy a "ticket". Each person will pick a number between 1 and 102 and my daughter will pick the winning number after all tickets have been sold. How does this sound to everyone? I can accept payment via paypal which would probably be easiest.

    Thanks for the interest so far. Here's the plan, please send $5 via paypal to montooth13@yahoo.com and please make sure the payment is a direct transfer (no credit card). This is my personal account and am not charged a paypal fee. Someone already sent $5 to my gregm13@yahoo.com merchant account and the paypal fee was 45 cents (9%!!!).

    I'll put together an excel spreadhsheet and number it 1 to 102. I'll assign your number based upon the order of your payment (i.e. if you were the 20th person to send payment, you get number 20).     C'mon guys! A cleft palate is a severe handicap to a kid, and correcting that will make a huge difference to his or her life.
    There has to be more cards sitting around to sweeten this pot!

    Anyone else? I'd really like to sell 130 tickets....quite a few more to sell. With generous donations from Griffins and Shouldabeena10 - the total prize pool is now well over $300. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Children's Hope International Foundation to fund at least 1 surgery.

    By the way, I received Frank Massero's check for $350 (Fabfrank) early last week. Thanks again!!

    I have talked to Rebecca at the CHI Foundation and she is waiting to hear back from the Beijing office to find out what children are in need of what surgery. With the extra money we have raised, I'm hoping that we can fund 2 surgeries. Once I find out, I'll post the information.

    Ok....time to pick the winner......(drumroll please...).

    I'm still waiting to hear back on what child(ren) will benefit from the money but I will post as soon as I hear.

    For transparency purposes, below is the last e-mail I received on 8/29/06 from the CHI coordinator:

    Hi Greg,



    I haven’t forgotten about you, I promise! I emailed our Beijing office after we spoke last week to ask for information about a child needing surgery. Specifically, I requested that they send us the name, location, medical situation, and photos of the child of their choice. I have not heard anything back yet, but it sometimes takes a bit of time for this information to be collected. I will remind them again that your family is waiting and will keep you posted on what I find out. Thanks again for your desire to help!

    Thanks for doing all the good work with the "auction". If this little bit can raise enough money for one of those kids to have something done to make a difference in their life, then we should try to do this on a regular basis. I am sure we can all donate some kind of prize.
