What do you think of this idea?

I would like to see a site where I could put in an order for a coin, say a 1878-cc morgan in pcgs. On this site would be 100's of dealers across the nation who were reputable. They would post detailed pictures of their coin with comments , and price delivered. I would have several different 78's to look at. All sales would have a return policy with the buyer paying for shipping costs if they decided they did not want to purchase it.
I think a site like this would benefit both the collector, and the dealer!

I second that - the dealers would never go for it though. Not in a million years.

I could see this possible only with stuff the dealers would otherwise wholesale. They would not sell their best coins through a mechanism like this, nor would I blame them for not doing so.

Still seems like too much work, especially when you consider this is the type of customer who is probably going to be price-conscious and trying to squeeze the profit margins.
  • I disagree. I would and have paid premium money for nice examples. Why would you not show your best coins? Don't you put a price on the coin and sell it to whoever is willing to pay it?

Basically sounds like a place for someone to post a want list. It would be nice if it worked but I don't think it would work. It would require way too much work than most dealers would be willing do when they are accustomed to having buyers come to them or wholesaling.
  • Taking pictures of your coin and posting them is too much work? I was thinking getting on a plane with a suitcase full of coins and lugging them to the next show was hard work.
How about if the site was screened, where you had to join to either buy or sell?

When dealers compete, buyers win..... It is a great idea, for the buyers.... and really for the dealers as well. Any good business person (I mean GOOD - not someone who thinks they understand business) realizes that inventory is expensive..... inventory turns represent profit.... so, both parties can benefit. Let the business begin.... Cheers, RickO

When they already are doing that on their own website and eBay and going back and forth to shows, yes.

I like the idea and think it would be nice from a collector standpoint. I wouldn't hold your breath though in hopes of getting any significant dealers to sign on. Ya never know though.
  • I am not talking about a wholesale site. I mean if I ask for a 1878-cc in 63-64 slabbed by pcgs ,or ngc , then any dealer who had a one could post it for me to examine. Wouldnt the overhead be much lower for a dealer to sell this way?

They at least used to have such a program. I don't know if the dealer teletype is still around or not. My assumption would be that it probably still is.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

Post your wants on Heritage or DLRC. They do notify you when something you want shows up in their inventory.

Better yet, most dealers that are online have contact information of sometype so shoot them an email. They would be more than willing to let you know if they have what you are looking for.

Or you could do it the old fashioned way, contact the dealer of your choice with your want list and your binding agreement to pay premium for your coin or a finders fee to the dealer and let them do the work. They would be more than happy to find what you want.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
  • That is why I would like to see a site like this. I don't want to enter into a binding agreement for a coin sight unseen. I want to look at several examples and pick the one I like. If just a few big dealers would do this it would catch on .

According to Laura the only reputable dealer out there is her! Everyone else are just WANNABEs!!!image
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

How could you "smoosh" a client that way,the best coins go to reliable customers................and comeback happy collectors.Talking face to face with a dealer is much better, especially with 25 and 50.000 $ coins.
  • is wannabee.com available for the site address image
  • WOW! I can't believe I posted this. Dealers competing for your business? Collectors having multiple dealers show them their best coins?
I must have lost my mind!
  • Hi Laura ^H^H^H^H^H, pbfloyd, This is a great idea. Sort of a superstore for certified coins. I don't believe dealers for the most part think that some sort of retail outlet would be in the best interest of their profit margin. Otherwise, a lost-cost arrangement like this probably would've already happened.

    "Sorry your avatar confuzzled me!"

What do you think, Mr. Bigglesworth?

I don't think you can post a want list here, but you can view a great many offerings from various CCE dealers:

I didn't know that was out there either, thanks Mark
  • I think that site is o.k., but it needs a detailed search function and a lot more pictures.
Not to mention it is "dealer to dealer" only.
