Why do you have a Registry Set?

If you were explaining to another collector about the Registry and they knew nothing about it, how would you explain it to them? In your own words, what is it and why do you have a Registry Set?

I'll be interesting to see some of the responses to this question. I personally do not have a registry set although I have nothing against the idea.

It is a way for me to keep an inventory online of my personal coin collection and to share that whith others safely. I also get to make new friends. Up until I joined I had no friends! image

    A couple reasons...

    1) It adds focus to what I am trying to collect (type set)
    2) It allows sharing with others of similar interest
    3) The sense of competition and satisfaction

I began buying graded Lincolns to keep from getting improperly graded and cleaned coins. I discovered you could list them on the web which was an excellent way to keep track of what I had, what I needed and meet fellow collectors.

  • Too many coins to collect them all...

I decided to focus on my favorite coin and complete a set.

In my case, with limited cash, I decided to do the Mercury Dime Late Date Set.

I have to admit, I have updated a bit since I started.

So, I guess the bottom line is, it has given me an opportunity to compete and complete!

So I can look like a pathetic coin nerd.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • Online inventory, and a great way to track and build a set.
  • It is a good way to keep track of what I have and what I need.
My main collection consists of 200 commemorative coins.
Sometimes I forget what grade a certian coin is and rather than digging through them I just look at my Set Registry on the internet.
Good way to show them off too...
    My Set Registry
  • For me, the registry provides a few things....
    1) I have made many friends via email and phone discussing their coins and my coins that I would not have otherwise met.
    2) Sometimes I get an email from someone that has something that will upgrade my set - and I love that.
    3) The few dealers I work with have a running inventory of what I have and need - plus I give them cudo's when they find a great coin.
    4) It has linked me in with people that know much more about the coins I collect, and I have learned a tremendous amount from them.
    5) It proves to my family that I am not the only coin nerd in existence.

    Great question.

I did a little research into the archives and found a post actually started by our wonderful "BJ" and this was basically the same question as this one.

What does the Set Registry mean too you?

This was the only time my name appeared in a CoinWorld issue!

I have to go along with Prke and djm here. I've had quite a few leads from my set being on the registry and have been able to sell/trade my dupes. It is also fun to meet each other face to face at bigger shows. In addition, knowledgeable dealers like to have their names listed on people's registry sets and will look harder for you.

It's also a fun safe way to share what you have.

No one posted "ego" yet....I am sure that is the answer for some.

For me.....I have a few sets for my son (I think it is cool for him to see his name there) and my birthyear set.
I do contemplate the birth year set at times as I can't beat the #1 (and don't even try now) and the relative cost for any minor move up isn't worth it (to me)

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

The challenge of the hunt for my sons and I. We've been trying to upgrade our Eisenhower set for almost a year now without spending thousands of dollars for a modern coin. Its been very tough.

The fun of competition and sharing. I know that I'll never have the $$$ to be in the top 5 but that doesn't matter. The best thing is getting to know other collectors and those who have an eye for quality. It can come in handy when they sell as you can pick up some nice coins and they can sometimes provide a sight seen opinion on coins one might be interested in.

I have two and I really dont know why I have them. It gives me a way of seeing where I stand among others, that have registry sets, collecting the same coins.

Without the Registry Set, it was like having pictures of your kids in your wallet. Unless a relative comes to town, nobody cares. You sit around your money bin, rolling around in your sets all by yourself. A certain glee in that , no doubt. But ultimately kind of lonely.

This way, you get to show off your babies to people who have babies, too! And ain't it grand to get compliments? ("Ooooh! Pretty!!...Here're MINE!!")

  • Well I started with a IKE set and it just went on from there.
Who knows where it will end.
    But it is fun though.
