Please Slap Me Silly For This Mistake...

Well, I sat down this evening and opened the 79 and 80 Topps baseball boxes I picked up from BBE at the National. The 80 box I opened first and pulled the Henderson that is probably an 8.

On to the 79, with about the fifth pack I opened, I had staring right in front of me an Ozzie Smith rookie. Centering is 90/10 top to bottom and you could have seen it through the bottom of the pack. I should have left that one sealed and had it graded. I went to0 fast and now want to strangle myself. Please everyone line up and slap me for this bad.

I did however pull a bunch of killer cards from the 79 box (real clean box) including these three that I think have honest to goodness shots at 10s:

I could not believe pulling these three all out of one box! They are absolutely stunning and I again believe all three have shots at 10s. I pulled some other 10 candidates as well.

Another thing of interest is that I did not pull a single Ryan out of either box (did however get two Ryan all time SO leader cards in the 79s). Wish me luck on these when I submit them. I sure wish that $5.00 special was around now!

Great pulls. Too bad on the Ozzie, but those other 3 should make you feel better about it.

Are you planning on selling them after being graded ?

Those 3 are gorgeous! The Brett looks like the weakest of the 3, but that was the largest scan.

Centering is a beotch on the 79's and those look primo. Nice cards and keep us filled in on the grades. Gene Simmons would be proud image

Yeah, I don't know why Brett came out so huge. He has the biggest ego of the three I guess.... I did just speak with Gene Simmons. He is very proud. image
  • Wow nice cards. Seeing those '79 Topps cards really brought back memories for me. I was ten years old then and I remember me and my cousins buying tons of those packs. I remember when Thurman Munson passed away in that tragic plane crash. I actually made a paper frame and glued the 1979 Munson card on the paper and wrote down that he had died. When I look back at having done that, I think I might have needed to see a shrink at that time..LOL!

Amazing sharp pulls for cards almost 30 years old! Good luck on the grades.

Judging from the scans, the Seaver looks like a potential 10, but I wouldn't expect higher than a 9 on the Munson and the Brett. 79s are very tough.

I don't think you made a mistake- '79 packs won't make back the grading fees, so you had nothing to lose by opening it.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Griff, I think he's talking about the pack that had Ozzie on the bottom. He could've gotten a few bucks for that.
