LT Craig R. Petersen, USCG Barber Half Set 100% Complete

I'm putting this in the US Coin Forum as the Registry Forum is dead. Enjoy.

With the addition of a very hard to find albeit not rare 1908-P, my set is at 100% completion. However, I only have 51 of the coins in the XF45 grade with 10 higher and 12 lower. I will need to upgrade/downgrade to get them all at XF45. The set has taken me approx. 5 years to put togther and this is not due to funds. The coins just aren't out there.

I've contacted just about everyone I know who has XF45 Barber Halves on the Registry to see if they would trade. If you have any of the following coins, I would be happy to trade. In fact, I will trade straight across any of my AU pieces for your XF45s as long as they are graded properly and aren't doggy. Correctly graded XF45s in PCGS holders have a certain wear pattern to them. I'm into a variety of colors, toning, dirt etc. The specific wear is more important to me.

I've "heard" that Q. David Bowers said it was either impossible to put this set togther in XF or he hasn't seen one. Can anyone lend any truth to this statement before I ask the gentleman himself?

I suspect that such a set has not been seen is correct.
From the PCGS population Report, you will have difficulty getting the following dates as less than 3 exist in XF45:

1894-O 2 exist
1895-O 2
1896 2
1900-O 2
1901-O 1
1902-S 2

1905 2
1905-O 2
1905-S 2
1909-S 2
1910 2
1910-S 2
1911-D 1
1911-S 1

Congratulations! That is quite an accomplishment. Good luck with the remaining XF45's - you might want to find them raw and "make" them yourself.

Some of those remaining coins will be really tough to find in exactly 45. You may have to roll your own on some of them.

Seems funny to think someone might be disappointed at submitting a coin and getting a 50 instead of a 45...

A complete Barber Half Set is quite an achievement period.....

XF-45 as a target is gives me a headache thinking about it.....

Way to go puddle pirate!! That is quite an accomplishment. I personally cant help you with the XF45 thing, but you have been patient this long, might as well wait a while longer....

I dont know of anyone with a true XF45 set, at least not graded. Tyler was close...but he had some missing as well....

Many thanks to all. I have made quite a few of mine and have crossed over many more. I have a couple I might do a Presidential Review with especially the 1898-O ex-Tyler piece in VF35.

CoinLieutenant and I are both Lieutenants. I just happen to work for that organization which is the hard nucleaus about which the Navy forms in time of war. The Navy can't stand that we will be celebrating 216 years of continous seagoing service. The Continental navy was disbanded and a new Navy was formed after the Revenue Cutter Service which became the Coast Guard in 1915. We are one of the 5 armed services but the most quickly forgotten. How many times have you been to an event where they recognized our service members but failed to recognize the Coast Guard? Happens quite a bit of the time.

I passed a white pickup truck with numbers on the side on my way to work today. Was a gigantic truck and it was towing a Coast Guard boat. Must have been nearly 30 feet long. Looked like it was all stainless steel. Had a big mean machine gun mounted on a post just behind the bow. Was pretty cool, I'd love to take that thing out to our local lake and say hello to some of the crazy ba$turds and their seadoo's.

A "exact grade" set is truly quite an accomplishment in any series, congratulations!

I have been working on my pcgs au58 walkers for some time now and only have about 65% of them.

Congrats on your set. My nephew is a Coast Guard Academy Grad. He recently was assigned to Key West. Tough job, but somebody has to do it.

Way to go Craig, fantastic accomplishment! Like others have said, you may have to crossover from an ANACS or ICG holder, or look for a nice raw example to submit. 5 years shows alot of patience (probably more than I have) to get to where you are now with your set. Best of luck finding the remaining dates in XF.

Craig - Way to go. What an accomplishment! Now, are you ready to hunker down for another five years or so to upgrade those remaining coins with original XF45 grades? A true XF set is probably the most difficult grade (barring the MS65 and higher Mintstate grades) to complete in the half series. If you can narrow it down specifically to XF45 grades, you will be the Barber king in my book.

Thanks Tyler. I have a deal for the 10-P and just bought a 14-S in an NGC AU55 holder that should be in an XF45 holder. So there is two more.

Kranky, I just might have to put them in my pocket for awhile. I wonder how long it would take to wear down an AU50 to an XF45? Just kidding.

Al, These are real AU50's, not borderline XF45s. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I just paid out my first finders fee for that 14-S. If anyone else wants to get in on the action, find away.

I have a 1904-S in NGC F12 for someone who can find me an 1897-O in PCGS XF45.

I also have some other pieces I will use including some AU pieces for finders fees for the 96-S, 97-S and 98-O in PCGS XF45.

The trouble is you don't work for the DoD.... instead you are under Homeland Security.

And what are the other two uniformed service... there are seven total?

p.s. My dad is a USCGA grad... class of 55. He was also an instructor there in the 60s.

Congats on the set and I wish you luck on finding the rest you need, also I have nothing but praise for the USCG they pulled me out of the drink after a botched HALO jump in 85 off the Florida coast.

That would be USPHS and NOAA.

I don't like being under DHS. Oil spills aren't important anymore. Lots of change in my almost 20 years of service. I'm sure your dad noticed that as well.

The 1896-s, 1901-s, 1909-o, 1913-s (to name a few) Barber quarters in XF..........I don't even want to think about it!

Craig that's a tremendous accomplishment. A matched nice circulated set in the same grade is indeed a most challenging undertaking. I will print out this thread and if I see any that may be candidates I will let you know.

I have been know to pick up a nice Xf or AU piece here and there. I will keep out watch.

I'm with you Dan. I can't afford the 01-S in XF45. If I could find one, I'm guessing it would be around $25-$30K easy. Just can't do that.

Many thanks for those recognizing the challenge of this set let alone trying to match grade the pieces.

Like I said, I'll be happy to pay a finders fee for pieces I need.
