In the last 12-24 months, what coin series have you started collecting...

and intended to pursue, but have lost in interest and discontinued? I think coin collectors must do this all the time. Start something...lose interest...try something else.

I thought I would get into proof seated dimes, but I lost interest quickly. I also have an album set of SLQs started (six or eight coins) that is teetering on the edge of being dropped.

When you feel you are forcing yourself to buy coins to fill holes, it's not a good sign. image

As for me... the things I've started and then abandoned have been a few different type sets... image

I've stepped back from my Morgan date/MM set to start a 7070 but I'm not ready to start selling off a bunch of raw MS MOrgans to fuel my new habit.

I've done something similar with Large Cents. Last year I did a major purge of my collection and with few exceptions, unloaded everything that either had some sort of problem or was in less than VF condition. I still consider mtself to be a Large Cent collector, but I've not purchased one in over a year.

I have totally divested myself of Merc dimes and Walking Lib Halves though....with the exception of those in my 7070 image

I stated buying for this set about 2 years ago.

I've wanted to assemble a nice late date set of Large Cents for years, and finally got around to putting one together. Other sets have taken priority and are almost done now, except for a few updates.

When this is finished I'll start on the 1816 - 1839 set. I've got a few of them, but still have many to go.

I was going to jump on that one too. He hasn't abandoned that at all! I have somewhat given up on seated half dimes. Prices are just getting too high and not worth it. TOo much competition to get the nice pieces.
  • None, when I start something, I can't stop till I have finished... plus I usually never buy anything outside that series.

I will have to say though, I haven't really bought anything in maybe 9 months...

Speak to me of loved ones, favorite places and things, loves lost and gained, tears shed for joy and sorrow, of when I see the sparkle in your eye ...
and the blackness when the dream dies, of lovers, fools, adventurers and kings while I sip my wine and contemplate the Chi.

Does British military pay scrip from African ports during the War of 1812 count?

Yes, I'm serious. I now have three of them.

I've narrowed my collecting focus to just pre-1916 copper in that time. I bought a civil war token and have always thought about getting more, but haven't.

Sounds like the Johnny Cash song, "I've Been Everywhere" (now in a commercial for a hotel chain).

As for me, I've started and stopped and started again and stopped again with Large Cents in the past 24 months.

I have been doing Morgans for decades. However, Jeff Oxman convinced me to take a shot at Peace VAMs somewhere in the thst couple years at Long Beach. I had avoided them over the years because I never liked the design and also because I specialized in prooflike dollars. They have been on and off since then. My eyesight is not the best, making it harder to discern some of the subtle reverse doubling on many of them and it is very difficult to cherrypick on internet images. I told Jeff I was thinking about selling the Peace collection when at FUN in January, but have since decided to add to it here and there but on the sidelines for sure.

The only series I've started collecting in the last two years is Assay Commission medals, and I'm still collecting those. Then again, I've been able to keep my collecting interests (relatively) focused for a while now. The last series I started prior to that was half cents (in 1993!) and those I'm still collecting also.
