Tough room! My grading skills obviously need some improvement. This coin is a PCGS MS65. I thought it had a shot at 66, albeit for that mark on the cheek - which is not as noticeable in person. This is one of the nicest Morgans that I have seen. It has tremendous eye appeal being all white with just a hint of edge toning. The fields are near proof like.
Would the die crack necessarily preclude this from a 66 or 67?
I can't find VAM-23C anywhere - can you post a link to a description. I'm pretty sure it is not in the top 100.
The mark on the breast is 100% unoticeable in person.
What I really need to do is buy that $800 macro lense that I've had my eye on so that I can stop using the scanner.
When you lead out with "I think it's undergraded" this tends to make people guess low... They will say the contrary, but it always seemes to be the case... Most of the fields are nice on the coin, but the few hits the coin has seem very noticible(at least in the pics). Die cracks generally don't detract that much from a grade so I wouldn't sat it's that.
The hit on the cheek and on the field to the left of Liberty on the Obv are what I notice.
And on the reverse the hit on the eagle, and the gash by the upper right wing are what sticks out to me.
Upon first seeing the pic I was thinking MS65... But I could see looking over the coin quickly and missing one of those hits you could see an MS66 there.

And don't buy an $800 macro lens... Buy a $440 Sony Cybershot 5.1 and you will be VERY happy with the pics it takes... Also don't forget to get a decent copy stand.

The strike on your coin is pretty weak. Grading from images can be difficult and I would trust PCGS' assessment in-hand and with magnifiers more than what we can determine from the images. I don't see 66 in that one though.
I have the Nikon D70s camera so I'd really like to stick with this since it was pretty pricey. I have a macro lense but it is built into a 70-300mm zoom and I need to be at least 3 feet away from the subject to take Macros - makes setup kind of hard. Nikon has a great Macro lense (my buddy has it) and I really want that one!
I have been looking all over for copy stands but can only find a handful on ebay - Amazon lists them but none are available anymore. Anyone know where I can get one?
It looks like PCGS does not yet recognize this VAM (PCGS VAM Guide) - If they do ever recognize it, would it be worth it to have it attributed?
Sorry Slipgate, but in the old days that coin would get no more than an MS-64, and it would not have had a shot at anything better. The marks going down from the eye on Ms. Liberty are an immedilate limiting factor. And the "gray" area plus the mark of the eagle's breat would limit the reverse.
Sorry, but this coin is another example of "grade-flation" and think of it as a shot MS-66 really seals the deal. The standards are getting lower.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I would not at all be surprised to see this coin in a 65 holder, and like the die break from 10:00-1:00 on the reverse.

Also, cracks are not taken into account during grading unless you are having the coin attributed.

PS...yours looks to be a grade higher than on the VAM site....albeit same stage die crack.
Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.

The one imaged at vamworld is an ANACS 64. am not crazy about the obverse toning and not sure why I chose that from my handful of 23Cs for that page.
