Is it fair game to stir the pot on these forums?

I beleive so, and have done so many times. After all, we are here to have some fun and to learn a bit about numismatics.

Often, the most popular (measured by number of posts) postings are controversial. I like to stir it up a bit, even to the point of taking abuse for doing so,

What say thee?

I think everyone's effort would best be served by sharing numismatic knowledge with one another. Also, sharing on buying and selling coins. If we stick to helping each other, especially collectors, we will be better off.

Now really, MBT, when have you ever taken abuse? Perhaps there's a difference between stirring the pot and serving the same gruel for over a year. image

If by "stirring the pot" you mean stating unpopular or strongly worded opinions on
subjects people tend to be passionate about, then yes. But with a few exceptions.
For one it should not contain factual errors. It should not be stated in such a way as
to incite or demean anyone. Keep spelling errors out of the title and the original post-
er should take some responsibility if it goes bad by either editing the title or asking it
    be moved.

Of course you should do as you want but there is common courtesy, even when stirring
    the pot.

Actually, I think participation would significantly fall off if the pot wasn't stirred occassionally image

Sure just as long as it is on subject (COINS) or related items or dealers.
No politics, religion, or other non-numismatic things.

Stirring the pot is fine, and even commendable if it done in fun. What crosses the line is trolling, spamming and personal attacks. Trolling is repeating the same comments over and over with no new information, just because you know it will get a bunch of responses. Spamming is promoting an item or a series where a person or company has a large self interest. Nothing wrong with showing off a new purchase (except when it for sale on BST in three days), or sharing information, but hyping a series when you carry a large inventory is crossing the line. Personal attacks are thankfully few on the coin forum.
