Proof seated quarter NT or AT?

stev32kstev32k Posts: 2,098 ✭✭✭
I've been watching this coin and even thou I don't usually care for toned coins I really like this one. With all the controversy over AT coins lately I'm a little hesitant about paying a premium for a toner, and I don't think I've seen another like this one. It is in an NGC PR65 holder and the asking price is high compared to non-toned PR65's. What do you think - AT or NT?

    100% natural. No doubt

My guess would be that that is one of them ones that you can't tell for sure whether or not it is AT or NT (i.e. looks natural, but may have been enhanced).

The coin is, regardless of what you have already been told, very NT. However, capturing an accurate image of proof surfaces is quite tricky and I would bet a good sum of money that the coin does not actually "look" like that in-hand. If you are not certain about this arena I would suggest you stay on the sidelines until you are confident in your abilities.

I'd say NT as did the service that graded it. To me it would be worth a premium. I don't think the photo is as juiced as others have said. The typical flat stars and high points are typical for some of the later 1880's date. Note the lack of toning on some high points.
I prefer even toning over the high points (less handling occurred).

A very nice example of a 65 imo. Sure beats those conserved cameo proofs that make up the majority of what you see today.

Probably NT, professionally photographed at just the right angle.

the coin is NT but PCGS won't graded it. They will say it is AT today. Next year who knows.

I think one would have to see it in hand; it's difficult to judge any coin from an overlit, "special angle" picture.

the image was meant to show color and it does, but the in person eye appeal is often different from these kinds of pics

I've had the coin in-hand and it is definitely NT and is certainly a image Seated 25c.
To describe the coin in-hand, the reverse was more impressive than the obverse IMHO.
It is a very pleasing coin.image

When I said "juiced" image, I meant visually optimized. The image on the photo is probably achievable (or virtually so) in hand with just the right angle and just the right lighting.

oooohhhh, someone scolded RYK. Nice backtrack, but I'm more with your original statement. It looks NT and I imagine very, very nice. But the image is juiced.

That's what I was really hoping to hear - someone that had actually seen the coin in person. I expected that a coin that nice would be recognized by someone.

Not that I owe anyone, least of all STman, an explanation, once I figured out who the seller was, I recollected two previous coins that I have purchased, both were photographed by an agent of the seller. Both coins, including the coin I presently use as my icon, had images that could have just as easily been considered juiced. In both cases, if the coin was angled to to a halogen light source, the appearance in hand could be made to look like that in the photo. I suspect that the quarter in the OP might be dark in a dealer's case, but if you took the coin home, and angled it to a halogen light (or maybe even an Ott lamp), you will see the same colors as the photo.
