southerncards, why do you constantly bash PSA, and promote your pro-SGC agenda on these boards?

You really don't see where assuming young collectors are inexperienced is patronizing?
My Webster's dictionary defines "patronize" as "to show favor or kindness to in a condescending manner."
"Condescend" is "descending voluntarily to the level, considered to be lower, to the person or persons one is dealing with; to be gracious or affable to inferiors."

The assumption that "younger" means "inferior" so let's give them the benefit of our vast experience = patronizing.

This must be devil's advocate day for me, but I don't agree with the patronizing tone. Right off the bat, I know of at least 2 teenage collectors who know more about vintage cards than I suspect I ever will. >>

    Mark,

I agree after re-reading my post. I was downright condescending. I apologize for that.

My intent was just to satisfy my curiosity about the age range of CU Forum readers. I should've just left it at that.

Thanks for pointing this out. Maybe the question/answer thread could be for them to share their knowledge with me!

Morrell - my statement was not that all younger collectors are inexperienced. Quite a few have some wonderful knowledge. The q & a was not my idea but I thought it was a good idea for those few younger inexperienced collectors who could benefit from it. There are also younger experienced collectors who could contribute info as well as older inexperienced collectors who could benefit. There was no patronization intended nor malice towards younger collectors. I'm sure we all have seen young collectors who have the good cards in their collections cherry picked by unscrupulous people/dealers.

  • << <i>You are not a consumer of PSA products. You do not even own a single PSA card, but yet you come on these forums to advertise about recent SGC sales and new SGC holders.

Take a look at your collection. You really do not have that large of a stake in spouting off some of the things you do. You own a few low grade SGC cards and feel the need to speak on behalf of SGC. That is not humorous. It is pathetic. >>

I think SGC is gr00vy, and I do own some PSA vintage cards. Now only if they would grade pimp worn platform shoe cards. Time to open another bottle of smooth Courvoisier.

<< <i>koby - I fail to see what my job and my choice of grading companies have in common. When I post a more "law enforcement oriented" comment about the illegal drug promotion on these boards that are often frequented by minors, I am often chastised for that too.

jackstraw - I'm sorry that you were treated that way and that you feel you were wronged. Again, if you feel that the service was not up to par, you have every right to complain to them and get satisfaction. >>

  • Just to put my two cents in on this:

I'm 19, been doing the set registry gig since it's inception, putting me at 14 at that time. Went to the Nationals in 2003 and 2004, been to nearly all of the Fort Washington shows from 2000 to 2005 and have had some sort of a job since age 11. By no means do I consider myself an expert, however, I do not appreciate the comments of southerncards. I agree about being not only condescending but also rude and inconsiderate. I felt it was not only an insult to my collecting credentials but also feel his advances and his requests are a bit strange. Yes, it is natural to be curious on who you are talking to on the internet, but in the two weeks I have been back to the board, I've seen this age request more than once by southerncards and find it to be a bit strange, creating an awkward environment.

That is all I will say; I had a few other words laced in there, but upon better judgement, I removed them.

riccaboni - I really think that you need to go back and reread that thread. I NEVER asked what everyone's age was. I stated that there were minors who frequented this board and it was someone else who decided to start a poll and find out the age ranges. I merely stated that I thought it was a good idea.

As far as your interpretation of me being condescending, I've already stated that my point was not to be that way but you can view it as you wish.

Southern - assuming you are an actual living, breathing human being and not simply a computer generated response machine - that's a pretty darned hard head you've got there. In the flurry of fellow posters who've stated that you've offended them, would it kill you to be a little more hat-in-hand and apologize for offending? On the other hand, if you are, in fact, always right, perhaps you might check to see if SGC will slab your ego.

    So easy to blame others.
  • southerncards

Why do you still hang around here when you keep getting bashed, mocked and generally seem to be unliked for the most part?

Is it just to create drama and get a rise out of people?

No actually I "hang around" because I like the wealth of information that can be found here. I often post information and responses to question and quite honestly, I think that I contribute useful info just like others. Now sometimes I reply to posts that involve complaints about PSA and I tell people that if they are not happy, pick another company. I've been with SGC forever and they do right by me. I've said before to pick a company that makes youi happy until they dont anymore. Sadly, some people have labeled me a PSA basher and others jump on the bandwagon.

I've been in this business for 20 years. Been a collector, dealer, show promoter etc. I've attended conferences, forums and been asked to head up vintage collecting websites. I've had people call me for opinions and collecting advice. I've sat in hotel rooms with everyone from Joe D to a 19 year old phenom named Dwight Gooden and chatted baseball. Somehow, all that is for naught as some folks who hide behind the computer have decided to malign my reputation. If that kind of thing blows your dress up, so be it. Your sticks and stones are not cracking my slabs.
  • Southerncards,

I'm not liked by everyone here either, but seriously, you are acting silly. It's similar to showing up to Eagles camp in a Dallas T.O. jersey and chanting "let's go cowboys" around a bunch of Eagles' fans during training camp!!

We are all well aware that SCG is another reputable grading company. Many collectors like SCG better than PSA. However, most people on this board perfer PSA because this is the PSA message board. They do not like being told that there cards would be better in another holder and that the service they are paying for is crummy.

Lets try to keep these boards productive and talk about collecting, show off our cards, watch people bust open their packs from the 1980's, and share their most recent sub's.

    -Ryan

Saying it once or twice is one thing, but over & over & over & over again gets old, especially when your talking to folks who wouldn't be here unless they favored PSA (well, except for a few).

Most of the nonsense is actualy not generated by me (see the Southerncards2 character). I just find it odd that every page is filled with threads about poor service, lousy grading et al and they werent started by me. I respond with the same response, grade with the company that makes you happy. Now dont get me wrong, I fully admit that I've suggested SGC on a number of occassions. They make me happy and I suggest them to anyone who is unhappy. I like certain products and services over others. Game used cards make me cringe yet they are a very popular segment of the hobby. I can't deny that but I can refuse to buy products that sacrifice quality memorabilia in the effort to boost sales. That's my right. Its your right to expect good service that you pay for from PSA.

Consider something too. If PSA reads these boards and we know they do, why haven't I been banned? If I have such a "pro-SGC" agenda and am hurting their business, why havent I gone the way of the "poof!" ??????? Its because I never say anything that isnt true. Some may consider it slanderous to point out their errors on their own doorstep. I say that this is the proper forum for it if collectors of PSA material ever hope for change. I support free enterprise and competition as it makes for a more economically stable hobby. I like that PSA is in business. I know PSA grades a ton of cards and therefore makes a proportional number of mistakes. That's only common sense. I support their right to do business and am greatful for this forum as it offers a great exchange of information. . Do they get it right most of the time? Sure. Are there some great cards in PSA slabs? Absolutely. Does every person who owns a single PSA slab deserve to have full disclosure on issues that affect their collections such as reslabbed cards, hijacked flips, etc? You bet they do. Does every collector deserve good customer service that their paid membership entitles them to? Without a doubt.

    Southern

The heads at PSA are not morons. They take what gets said here with a grain of salt.

If you post things that are out and out lies - make accusations about their integrity that you can't back up with evidence - or post things that totally are detrimental to the image of PSA and their mission - then expect to be banned.

You stating your opinion that SGC is better from all categories to include customer service hardly falls into that arena.

Now, if say that Joe O. likes platform shoes and Disco...

You better be darn sure of it!

    Southern,
It's when you respond to legitimiate posts with such gems as "Let's look under Mary Lou's dress at recess" and "What are you still doing living with your parents" that bring about your "unfair" treatment. Anybody who goes around mocking others for no other reason than to get a rise out of people is a jerk, and will be treated as such.

This is just the straight poop - your posts are not hurting business - your over-the-top knee jerk alligance to the competition serves to bolster loyalty to PSA amongst most of us. Read your history: Those who attempt to divide and fail only succeed at strengthening the opposition. Your stay here is more than welcomed by corporate because it translates into dollars. You're actually doing your hated adversary a huge service. Not so much with us - your persona is simply an aggravating nuisance.

Edited to add: Hey, is it possible southerncards is actually a PSA plant?
