"... but did you actually look at his other auctions?"

    //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Yes. I looked at them last night.

HER current auctions are full of cards from the same
"illustrious collection" that bf's came from. ALL of them
    are obvious grading-scams.

Also, her fb is NOT encouraging. Her number of 99.1
is just not that great considering the relative few
transactions. She also leaves snotty retal fb; a sure
sign that a seller should be AVOIDED. The fact that
she has been on eBay for 8-years - and only has
300+ transactions, may mean that she does not know
how to grade cards; BUT I DOUBT that --- I think she
is just your run-of-the-mill BAD seller.

Not sure i understand that. This person has only 2 negs. a quick glance at feedback and many are saying 'great cards' etc.

99.1 with 1000 feedbacks would have more negs?

Buying raw is always a crap shoot, however this person is just plain sleazy.

<< <i>Is the seller an idiot for shipping the cards the way he did? Absolutely. >>

I think the idiot here is you. If cards are advertised as nm or better, you should expect an average of at least EX or EX-MT. >>

    Shag

I think this is not fair.

I have made mistakes. If you remember BF said he was just getting back into the hobby.

And, I think he was a bit trusting - I agree with all - ask for better scans - look at the FB - look at their other auctions.

He will, most likely, get his money back and as Mark aka Morrell said - cheap lesson - actually even if he doesn't get it back.

I think you would be disappointed if someone said that to you and I would be defending you also.

I can't back up the claim that blindflyer is an idiot, and I certainly agree that the seller is a schmuck.

But anybody that has bought raw on ebay knows sellers of raw material tend to overgrade, so you're taking a major risk by bidding on anything raw. If you get worse than expected, you lose out and hope for a refund. If you get better, it's a surprise bonus. You know for the most part that the description is going to be inaccurate. If you're not willing to accept the fact that the cards may be heavily overgraded, don't buy raw. If you're willing to take the gamble, factor it in to your bid (as boo said). Whatever happens, deal with it and move on. You're wasting your energy getting upset about it if you already know what the market conditions are. And if you didn't know what the market conditions were, now you do. It's like getting upset every time a seller overcharges for shipping.

  • I don't think anyone ever called bf an idiot. That "idiot" comment was directed at me from one of my quotes.

    99.1% / 211 .
    300+ transactions.
    8-years.
10%+ of total FB-score is from sellers.
Many buyers do not know "good/bad" condition. (They just want a cheap "old card.")
    Retal FBs left by seller.
    "Fear Factor" from low-FB buyers.

    It is all cumulative.

AND, in the context of researching an "after the fact bad deal,"
judgement becomes biased. (Even allowing for that bias, 99.1
on 211 distinct is not a "card dealer" I want to buy from. These
kind of sellers do NOT "improve with age;" they keep doing the
same thing they have always done, and NEGS usually/always
increase as distinct sales go up.)

If I am selling used clothes, I expect to get nailed on FB; wrong-size,
funny-smell from dyes/mothballs, looks different than the picture,
collar is stiff, zipper sticks, all the kind of stuff used-clothing buyers
say. 98% FB used-clothing sellers do not spook me.

BUT, on the issue of grading cards/coins/currency/stamps/postcards,
EVEN one "caught mistake" can make me run fast, if the rest of the
    context says I should.

TIP FOR NEWBIES: One good tip on FB is not to use the default
25 views on the FB pages. Down at the botton, hit "200 display"
and scroll fast for red/grey dots. (In the instant deal, that would
not have revealed a "grading complainer," but it can.)

I have bought some decent raw cards before. I expect a 'near mint' card to be of psa 6 quality at least (that is giving the seller a little leeway)

I know when I list an item as EX, I expect it to grade at a 5. A Near Mint listing, is a card I would expect to grade out at a psa 7.

    I see the your quote.

But, my feelings are the same.

If we resort to calling each other idiots on all conversations - the dialogue stops and the battles ensues.

  • This is why when I purchase cards from ebay and the scan is not detailed, I specifically ask for a better scan. If i do not get one, then i do not bid.
  • I've read the majority of the posts on this thread and there are a lot of good comments mixed in between the flames. Bottomline, when buying raw cards, the seller's claim of condition, if not backed up by a high-quality scan, means very little and those type of auctions should be avoided. Now, if a high-quality scan and the seller's condition seem to be consistent, check feedback from buyers very closely. If the fb from buyers looks good, you could probably bank of the fact that the actual grade of the card/s is within one grade listed by the seller. Also, if there is a return policy, that's even better. The main thing is the quality of the scan. If the scan sux, that usually means the seller's is trying to hide something wrong with the card. Just my 2 cents based on some experience.
