So the phone rings again............

"Good Afternoon...... Michiana Coin & Bullion" I said..........

"Is it safe to come in?" a voice asked........

"Uh..... Yes........" I responded

"OK, I'm in the parking lot......... I'm coming in"......... said a mans voice...........

Thru the door walks a fairly normal looking guy in an Electric Company uniform.......

"I called you yesterday about some gold coins" !!!!!!!!!

"Ahhhhhhhh, " said I, looking at a crinkled up Wal-Mart bag in his hand...... "Lets see what you have there".............

So he proceeds to open the bag and remove 2 smaller inner boxes......... I'm still expecting a collection of gold plated Franklin Mint "Snails of Nova Scotia" Commemorative Set.....

He slides the top off the first box, and there's NO certificate of Authenticity (This is a GOOD sign).............

He pushes it toward me, I look in......... First thing that catches my eye is a "Swiss America" barcode label, but I dig in..........

Low and Freakin' behold, both boxes are PCGS (OGH & Rattler) & NGC slabbed $20 Gold coins !!!!!!!!!

No rare dates......... Just lots of GOLD......... 25 pieces total.............

We cut the deal............. He haggles for an extra $100 on the whole lot......... I figure it's only 4 bucks more a coin, so the deal is done...........

WOW! Is he giving up collecting or are the coins from a real "estate" that he inherited?

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

  • Did he want cash? If I remember the first phone call there are 20 double eagles there so you just laid out a nice chunk of change. I guess the guy was nervous.

Without knowing how much the guy got, I don't see how someone else could say it is "win-win".
Was he paid bluesheet? Greysheet -20%? Greysheet? Etc......

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • Rest assured the seller was paid a fair price...... I'm a "brick & mortar" guy in a SMALL town......... Yeah, I'm the only game in town, but there are 3 other shops within 25-30 miles....... I make my living by buying & selling, NOT from wrestling collections from widows & orphans for peanuts........ My reputation in town is that I pay VERY well, and instantly. In order for fresh material to keep on walking thru my door, I MUST maintain that reputation......... Nothing can sink a small town business faster than getting a bad reputation, and I won't take that chance....... It's not what I'm about....... So all of you thinking that every brick & mortar guy lives for the rips might have to re-evaluate that line of thought.

I hope I get a call locally as good as that one? My last purchase of gold was 16k worth of american eagles (just bullion)
  • I'm expecting to see the following headline in the paper 30 miles away:

"Rare Gold coins STOLEN! Owner never suspected the old greenskeeper was up to no good...............".

Thanks Jim. I actually thought that about you, having met you at Fun '05, but I wanted to not make blanket assumptions. We know there are good B&M people and ripoff ones. Appreciate it!

  • When i first read your first post about this guy i thought you were telling us it was Russ playing a trick on you, Its cool it was real and that he took it to someone that wouldn't take advantage of him and offer him chump change for his coins like the B&M shops in my area do. I actually went into one locally for the first time and he was shooting the $hit with some guy sitting there talking about how he reamed a old widow woman out of her husbands collection, i just turned back around and walked out. I didn't want to do business with someone who does business like that, i mena i know a man has to make a living but offering them 10 cent on the 100 just doesn't sit well with me
