"The close AM variety is a vital coin to own to have a complete PCGS Registry Set of Lincoln Cents. Though yet to be listed on the PCGS web site this is the sole exampled certified as a RED DEEP CAMEO coin. As a point of interest, there are a mere four Proof CAMEO coins certified by PCGS. A truly modern rarity among the small Cents varieties."
Since the infamous description of the 7/16/06 (barely more than a year ago) auction by Teletrade (above), there have been well over 150 "Red Deep Cameo" coins graded by PCGS (a nearly 15,000% increase ) and a 75% (or more) drop from the ridiculous high over well over $2,000 for a 69DCAM (even higher drop from the $3,000+ "shot number").
But I still think Lincoln memorial varieties is the place to be. It's a gamble to get in early after discovery (like this 99-S), but sometimes you get lucky (like the 99 MS Close AM). And it's starting to look like the 90 no S, the 92-D Close AM and the 98-S Close AM are the long-term genuine article.
Don't be consoled. That has got to be a manipulation. NGC 69UCAMS have been going for WAY less than 1/2 to 1/3 of that price. I've purchased at least 15 of them and NEVER paid over $600 and paid as low as $400 or so.
At least Mark has the b*lls to let them go no reserve starting around $1 or so (although I do think citing the NGC sale is a bit misleading to the uninformed as I'm sure it was a manipulation).
Certainly NO ONE chiming in on this thread (or any dealer here on the forums) would go on record here that they'd even pay half of that price for an NGC 69UCAM.
Short of that, it's a tacit admission that, yes, the price was manipulated AND/OR disingenuous at best to cite that sale while simultaneously not being willing to pay at least half of that "suppsedly real" price.

This makes me feel better!
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
most coins are ugly and milky on the reverse, 69 coins are tuff to get.
my guess is the percentage is around 20-30% 69's.
thanks
Ebay Close AM 68DC
put up another 69 auction when one is already going.
I guess you like to get less money for your coins.

at least you have some smarts.
36 out of 179 at PCGS as of today. Just over 20%.
I know several people have tried, and it seems more of these have surfaced.
still seems a very tuff coin in 69 grade.
