That is a fascinating coin. I don't think it could pl at PCGS. I assume even NGC slabbed it thinking the obverse would be pl if not for the wonderful toning. In any event, these are pretty rare, and even more so given the attractive toning. Nice.

Is the 81-S in 64 PL really that rare? The PCGS pops list over 3000 in 64PL. This 78-s in PCGS 66 seems to have some PL character under the toning esp on the reverse. Nice 81-s nonetheless.
I have had the pleasure of viewing that coin in hand, and let me tell you the mirrors make the color just explode off this pup. Pl in anyones holder. Very, very nice coin, Lloyd!
When I mentioned the coin's rarity, you can't look at a population report. It is rare for PCGS to slab a toned morgan pl or dmpl because the toning makes it more difficult for the coin to show complete mirror depth from 1 o'clock to 12. The heavy the toning, the less likely a dmpl or pl designation by PCGS.
NGC tends to grade a little differently. If one non-toned side is fully pl or dmpl, NGC seems inclined to give the other side the benefit of the doubt, and as long as the toned side exhibtis some reflectivity, it may get the pl or dmpl designation by NGC, even if the toned sound standing on its own lacked the required depth for the designation.
Having seen tons and tons of slabbed morgans, I can say that toned morgans earning the pl or dmpl designation are rare. A few toned specialistis have them, but few others.

It is a nice coin, no doubt, but not likely a pcgs pl. Are you telling me at all point on the obverse you can see a reflection at 4"? Never. Those colors are too dark. In the end, I don't think it matters, the coin is nice no matter what. It won't cross so save your money, and never crack it out, because even NGC may change its standards and then you'd have a plain old toned morgan, not nearly as rare as if it included the pl designation.

Interesting opinions from someone who has never held the coin in hand. I have. It' pl and would cross. Beautiful coin Lloyd!
If it has some reflectivity, I would call it a PL as it has the asthetic character of a proof as well. The TPGs have had to metricize the criteria on mirror depth but collectors do not need to adhere to that. Some of the top prooflike collectors judge PL on the overall presentation of the coin and not the TPG tag necessarily, though they often will coincide. As for this coin, yes, there are a lot of gemmy PLs for that date, the market is lousy with them. However, this is just a plain nice coin overall. If there is someone who is doing a type set and wants a Morgan, this would the kind of coin I would suggest; that or a 66DMPL common Carson City (like an 82-CC).

Lava, with a coin that nice, who cares what holder it is in.Wait til you see it in hand.BTW,I recently sold 2 PL toners in PCGS holders, a 64,and 56,and like the colors on this one and another recent pickup better. I AM one of those toned specialists that you are referring too BTW,But only a collector always looking for nicer coins.
Great coins are not cheap, and cheap coins are not great!
It is a nice coin, and I am not knocking it in any way. So, no need for anyone to get defensive.
I like the NGC holder just fine too.
I think the only point of disagreement is whether PCGS would cross it.
Hadleydog, I respect your opinion, but I'm not convinced. I know you know your toners and pls, and I have not seen this coin in hand, but I can't believe PCGS would cross it.
So, I have a nice little challenge. If bestclser 1 wants to submit it to cross at 64pl or 65pl, I'll reimburse him for the submission in the event it successfully crosses, if Hadleydog or anyone else is willing to reimburse the submission fee if it fails. Pretty good offer.
At any rate, it is a nice coin -- enjoy it. These are few and far between, the coin is deserving of a nice premium, and that says it all. The holder adds little to the coin, just a numbers guy between men acting like kids.
Not so sure NGC would PL it and lots of already holdered PLs today. I have noted they are getting fussier lately too. I wouldn't cross it. It's got a star on the tag and the toner IMO presents nicely in the white holder.
