A new half cent for my dansco that I picked up this week

coinbufcoinbuf Posts: 11,723 ✭✭✭✭✭
Very common date, not sure but could be cleaned and retoined. Has a neat die crack and some sort of clash/planchet flaw on the obv just in front of the portrant. What do the early copper guys think?

I am not a copper guy per se but I like the character of the coin. The die crack is cool and if it has been cleaned a long time ago and retoned, it is quite attractive in my opinion.

A lot, in fact probably the vast majority of 19th century coins have had a cleaning at one time. As long as the coin has not been harshly dealt with, has minimal hairlines and doesn't looked washed out, it should be acceptable. I like it.

  • Nice chocolate color. The die crack adds character. Good 7070 coin.

That's a beauty!!! Love the die crack image
Possibly lightly cleaned, but long ago, IMO. It's a keeper, though image

Love the obverse die crack, but that issue going on in front of the portrait is a major distraction.
That being said---Is that a real nice doubled reverse on that one?
I am not up on the series but that looks to be major ubber cool reverse doubling on the HALF CENT.

Wonderful coin, who cares if it's common date, that's a great one for a 7070.

Thanks for all the complements, this is the first half cent I've ever bought and I have to say that I could get hooked on these quite easily. image

The die crack is super cool IMO. The area in front of the portrait is not so distracting in hand and I'm not sure if its part of a clash or just some planchet flaw; but overall it adds to the coin for me. Perhaps someone more versed in half cents can comment on the doubling on the rev. It shows on the center lettering but none of the rest of the design or lettering seems affected. Just guessing but if the letters were hand stamped on the die it might explain this.

Thanks Ziggy29 and The Raven; Ziggy I could'nt aggree more just right for the book and a perfect match for the one large cent I currently have. Raven, like you I love the BN coins so much better, all the RB coins I've seen just look wrong for a coin this old.

Definitely clash marks in front of the chin. I'm not sure, but probably the middle leaf under (S)TA(TES). The recutting on the H and C of HALF CENT are characteristic of the die.

I am NOT an expert on half cents, but am trying to learn about the series, especially the Draped Bust half cents. I've been perusing my copy of Breen's Encyclopedia of U. S. Half Cents (even though it makes me feel very dirty) and it looks like you have a Cohen-1. Personally, I think the Breen book is pretty lousy, and it gets off to a bad start with the megalomaniacal frontispiece. He didn't even mention the die cracks for this variety, but does for another die pairing. I believe this information to be correct- maybe someone else can correct me...

Looks to me like the piece was nicely recolored, but it's still an attractive piece. When I see recolored pieces, my initial reaction is #$@!!!- why would someone do that!!! But then I tell myself that, chances are, the coin was recolored for a reason, and there is a good chance that the coin would look much worse if had not been treated. Who knows... a good recoloring may have been the saving grace for your old copper.

This is a good date for a type set. Have one myself. Later date Classic Half Cents are closed collar
coins, so t hey usually come well struck. Mine's RB and has nice color; many RB old copper coins are splotchy, though.

Thanks for the information Regulator, and yes I do also think it may have been cleaned and recolored at some time. The luster is still excelent but the color has that blue toined Lincoln kind of look that I've seen. Still it has nice eye appeal and would possibly grade under market acceptable conditions. I sent an email to the folks at EAC to see if thay can provide me with some further information about this coin and its die state.

I like it. The left obverse field shows some clash marks, though there may be some repaired scratches in them also. I wouldn't want to say that definiately from the photo though.

It is a C-1 variety (common). More importantly, it appears to be an unlisted die state! Neither Manley, Cohen, nor Breen list an obverse die crack for this variety. Congradulations if this is so!

  • This is a great 7070 coin. If all of your selections are up to this standard you will have an enviable type set upon completion.
  • Very Nice !
  • A very nice Half Cent. Great crack on the obverse, and the reverse is very nicely toned.

I contacted Ron Manley about this coin. (He is the author of Half Cent Die States 1793-1857). He says that it does appear to be a die crack to the best of the ability one can determine from a photo, and that if so, it would be a new, and latest, die state of the C-1 variety. If you want to get in touch with him, I can PM you his email address. The only other possibilities I can see this being are a planchet crack (also significant), or else a hair on top of the coin. You can check that last possibility easily.

  • I like it a lot. Great eye appeal. Did it take you long to find it? I'm just starting on a 7070 and there's an inner battle going on between the need for instant gratification and the desire to do it right.
