1982 Topps Baseball Thread

Since there wasn't one of these, and I have become more and more enamored of them as of late, here it is.

Quite some time ago I submitted the Ripken rookie from my raw set, it came back an 8...would have liked a 9, but an 8 was more than acceptable for the card.

Recently I've picked up both the Rose and Henderson cards from this set....love the photography of them.

The Henderson:

and the Rose:

Love these cards and feel I may be getting sucked into another set...any other set collectors out there with cards that are real toughies?

  • I recently sent in 22 cards to PSA from a rack box and surprisingly received seven 10's, 13 9's and an 8. One of the 9's was a Ripken.

Here are a couple of the 10's

I'm not going to try and complete this set but will bust more racks for potential HOFers in 9 and 10 grades.

'82 Topps was the first set I really bought as a kid.

I recall putting 2 sets of these together via packs!!!!
  • I have these available to anyone on the board.

    1982 Topps Dave Righetti RC #439 PSA 9 - $5.95
    1982 Topps Dave Parker IA #41 PSA 9 - $5.95
    1982 Topps RBI Leaders # 163 Schmidt / Murray PSA 9 - $6.95
    1982 Topps Home Run Leaders #162 Schmidt / Murray / Evans / Armas / Grich PSA9 - $6.95
    1982 Topps Ron Guidry #9 PSA 8 - $3.95

All prices are delivered. PayPal OK.

If someone on the board wants them all for $25 delivered, that's fine with me. I would like to pass these on to an owner who is puttting the set together so I can buy a few more racks.

  • I'm not currently working on the set but I have large starter sets of 82 and 83 Topps in PSA 8 and 9 for sale.

I started this set last year but have it on hold at the moment...lots of nice cards and memories for me.....some day in the future I'll probably kick start it back into action......
  • I too have thought about this set, but the 1980 and 1983 Topps sets are too enormous themselves to start on another set. But I do have some 82 Topps if you or anyone is interested in adding to their 1982 Topps set. (You might see a trend here with the cards I have.) They are:

1982 Topps Record Breaker Nolan Ryan #5 PSA 9 $7
1982 Topps Astros Leaders Nolan Ryan #66 PSA 9 $7
1982 Topps Astros Leaders Nolan Ryan #66 PSA 10 $50
1982 Topps Astros Leaders Nolan Ryan #66 PSA 10 $50
    1982 Topps Nolan Ryan #90 PSA 9 $7
    1982 Topps SB Leaders (Henderson/Raines) #164 PSA 10 $25
    1982 Topps ERA Leaders (Ryan/McCatty) #167 PSA 9 $7
    1982 Topps Danny Darwin #298 PSA 10 $17
    1982 Topps Rickey Henderson # 610 PSA 9 $7

    All prices delivered.

  • Ilove the 82 set...Great phots and a nice clean design.
  • I have been having a fun time with the 82's for several years now. When you can find high end examples
with great color, gloss and focus these cards are awesome! Doing the set in high grade has been much tougher than what I figured when I started.
  • Apparently centering isn't a huge factor on these cards.

Surprised at some of the grades.

Not very happy to be here. Perhaps after one of the 1981 postseason games he pitched in that the Phillies lost (and not because of Reed.)

Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
  • Hi Mark, nice cards! Are you a player/team collector or going after the entire set? Steve
  • I am playing around with all the basic Topps sets right now. I am starting to get a pile of 1980 Topps going so I will continue to pick up 9's and 10's when I see them at can't pass prices.

I will probley start working a little more on the player sets also.....to help earn free grades, but it's hard to predict my next purchases.

    Clear Skies,

  • It seems like lately good deals are out there on PSA 10's from the 80's. Competition is light right now on the 82's so you can do ok on those. I was paying close to double current prices a few years ago for 10's. I'm almost done with the set and a few collectors I used to bid against aren't active right now, so it's mostly the player/team collectors in the mix. Good luck with your collecting Mark-enjoy!

I just wanted to mention on this thread that I'll be auctioning off a Lot of 5 PSA graded 82's starting Dec 23rd at noon on eBay. They're all star cards and graded 8's and 9's. I also have a Ripken PSA 9 going up at the same time.

  • I hate this set's chippiness. The damn ink seems to run also! But the worse is the stupid Wax stains that get on the Dookie Green Backside(here-to known as DGBS!) It looks like someone hawked a nasty ol' noogie on my card, especially if when it's on a prized gem like the Vance Law rookie card! (yeah the one with him and those other guys.)

Hi, I'm looking for card #626 Randy Jones. One of my sons over the holiday emailed one of the 82 registry set guys as he knew I'm collecting certain cards. I was a little embarrassed, but he said he wanted to surprize me. I just sent one in to get graded but I don't think its going to do well, sometimes they see things that I don't see . Needless to say, if anyone can help or point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks , Sonny ( Calaban7)

What happened with the auctions? I couldn't afford them, but I was curious to see if anyone would have bought them at that price.
Yeah, I uploaded that KC icon in 2001
  • Those 82 blackless brett auctions were pulled? They didn't look like they were blackless, more like errors from PSA.

Those are a PSA error. There were no autographs on the All Star cards and his name would be missing on the 82 Blackless variation.

PSA made a similar mistake with a Mike Schmidt card that was erroneously listed as Blackless and selling by 4SC. I got PSA and 4SC involved quickly, and I believe the error was rectified.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • And when I send in a true blackless card I always have to send it back because it always gets graded as a normal card.
  • Just listed a Danny Ainge Rookie card (Blackless) PSA 8 if anyone is interested.

Ian ,Way to go on adding those extra 82's to your set. glad to see you back on the boards. I'm still looking for card #626 Randy Jones in PSA 9 or above. Uncle Buck

  • Ian, congratulations on reaching 50% on your 82 set! Over halfway home on a truly huge set. Good work!
  • rugbymarinerugbymarine Posts: 421 ✭✭✭✭
    Uncle Buck,

I've got the replaced cards for ya whenever is good for you.

    Viking, (i think it's SteveLee, right ?)

Someday, I might catch up to your set.

  • Ian, I saw one of your prior posts and thought I would follow up on your question about the blackless
82's. I'm not sure if they were discovered in all the different types of packaging available in 1982. I did talk to a couple of collectors who actually pulled some of these cards back in the day. One guy said he found some blackless cards in cello packs out in the New York area and another collector mentioned finding many of the "C" sheet blackless cards in vending cases through a card shop he frequented in the Detroit suburbs.

Good luck to you on the 82 Topps set you're building!

    Steve,

By the way, Congrats on reaching 100%. That set is huge and to reach with 9.3+ rating is absolutely outstanding. How far are you going to take it ??

Ian, I didn't think you would remember who Uncle Buck was . Ask your dad. Glad to see you back on the boards.

  • Thanks Ian, I'm glad to finally be done. It was a lot of fun. I may add in a few upgrades here and there. I'm real happy with most of the 9's in the set so upgrading the few 8's in there may be the next project.
Time to take a little break now. Good luck with your set Ian, enjoy the ride.

Uncle Buck, Uncle Mark, The Orkin Guy. Not sure if you saw, but I won the last card I needed for my Palmer Basic Set tonight. A 1967 PSA 8 for just over $90. I've seen them go cheaper but that is a very decent price. Thanks again for the cards. Sorry it took so long to put them into the set.
  • I have some 82's that are graded PSA 9 with no qualifiers if anyone is interested. There are some very low pops. You can PM me if interested or email me at texasco@aol.com

    Hello to all,

Please PM or email me if you might like to trade any Raw '82's, I need about 150 to complete my set and have about 1000 duplicates or so available for trade (or sale)... I'd be happy to trade for other Topps years as well.

    thank you,
