Jack - I was at the auction and bought a 1953 D cent for $5,000 + and got everyone to clap for me. The 13 s in 66 red did not meet reserve because it was not even close to red. The 14 s sold to Jack Lee.One of the most highly contested coins was the 22 No D strong reverse because the strike was so crisp.
All in all Bowers and Merena had a Press Release claiming 21 new Auction Price Records for Lincoln cents 1909 - 1958.
At least you won a lot. That's pretty good with Jack Lee in the room. Any other Lincolns from the sale that stood out in your mind? What do you think about Lloyd's comments? The 16-P certainly couldn't have been as nice as my old coin that now resides in your collection. That coin is probably a 68. What about the 16-D in 66? It looked awfully weak on the reverse in the image.
GERRY!!! Where the heck have you been? Good to hear from you. Look, you've been gone so long that prices for "modern crap" have gone up ten times!! On a serious note, I should have bought that 49-P in 67 that you had consigned to Andy a couple years ago for $4500. Did you see the price of the Ann Kate coin? Wow. Hope all is well,
Pcgs could have kept grading like they used to, and then there'd be 100 ms67 53-d's and it'd be worth $200. Although, I'm sure both of you guys would have the best coin regardless. I got an ms67 53-d too, traded my 64rd 16-s and $2200 for it. I might have to buy a 55-d someday. I'm sure I can eventually find 56-d and 57-d in ms67 from a roll. That'll take care of all the D's for me.
Gerry - Don't feel bad because I bought a 14 s that graded 66 red out of a penny board that I figured for $1,500.And it blows away the Ann Kate example. And noone ever clapped for me.Only when I buy a 53 d for $5,200 or you buy a 1940 P for $22,000 do we get an applause.
Does anyone know the total price realized for the whole collection ?
How about the total price realized for the three most powerful Lincoln cent collections. The Tom Mershon collection,The Joshua and Ally Walsh collection and the Ann Kate collection?
Not counting those, the varieties, or the dupes, the regular 09-58 coins sold for $834,614. In addition the the 22 plain sold for $82,800 and the 55 DDO sold for $47,150.
Do you have an estimate for the set including the coins that didn't sell?
I thought the set would bring less than $1,000,000.I think Bowers and Merena did a good job as they got some big bids and not many people have any idea who was bidding.Bowers discloses very little. They don't even have a ding when there is a buy-back.
Copernicus - Jack Lee has not as yet registered his set.To the best of my knowledge Andy Skrabalak does not have a Registry Set.But I will register the 1953 D that I bought for $5,200.
i THINK $40 -50K for a ms 65 red 55/55 double die is the correct price.Martin Paul once paid $60,000 for one in a first generation holder and lost about 15 K.It is a pop 18.A nice 64 red can bring in excess of 20 K.

Whatever happened to Martin Paul? I used to see him buy upwards of 25% of Heritage's Signature sales in the late 1990's.

The 1955 DDO cent in MS-65RD has been quiet at the $40,000 to $50,000 range the last two years. I sense that it will not be this way much longer?

Thanks for the response. You think the 1955 DDO cent real pop count might actually be closer to 12?
That PCGS reported pop count has remained unchanged at 18 for the past 8 years.

He's around and buyng...just a little less noticeably.
