Will the Ann-Kate collection produce a $100,000 Lincoln cent ?

I've heard the 1914 s Lincoln cent in ms 66 red could bring $100,000.His 1909 s VDB in ms 67 red could also be a contender.Do you think his set will bring more than The Joshua and Ally collection ?

Will there be a Jack (Lee) and Bobby (Hughues) show ?

    Hi guys,

I've been informed by the owner of the Joshua and Ally collections that Bob Hughes was not shilling for him and he has asked me to set the record straight.

Now, Stewie, have you got your checkbook ready?!

  • I met Barry at the 2005 FUN convention and found him to be a very nice and sincere person. I'm sorry that my comment was misunderstood. It was meant to be a lighthearted swipe at what took place at that auction, as I was there. I thought the emoticon would help convey that message.

    Ann-Kate = ?

Joshua and Ally Walsh = ?

    Such mystery in numismatics

Why can't everyone be like me and put their name on their collection ?

I would like to hear a name Laura would give my collection.

  • Stewart,

Is that $100,000 hammer or with the juice? The 14-S has a chance, but I don't think the 09-SVDB will make it.

I would love to see the 14 s in your collection.Rumor has it Gerry wants the coin but has cold feet with the value.Perhaps Lloyd will step up to the plate ?The consignor only paid $37,000 for the 09 s VDB in 67 red vs $90,000 for the 14 s in 66 red.

My only Joshua and Ally Lincolns coins also say Walsh on the label and were from some auction. Picked them up for several of mint sets I'm doing---I thought they were very high end--but what's with the name?? Is it real? (The only cent set I'd heard of was Stewarts, since I mostly collect Morgans).image

We all know who Joshua is and so do you. No need to put a name on that set(s).

  • What about the rest of the set? Is there a list somewhere? I've looked on the B&M page and the set is closed. It would be nice to see what's in store.

    Stewart,
Bender will probably step up to the plate for the 14-S.

  • The '14-S is a pop 2, while the '09-S VDB is a pop 9. The '14-S goes for more (much more?) but won't break the $100K mark, IMHO.

As the owner of the OTHER '14-S (heh, heh), I'd love to see it go over 100, but I don't think it will.

The first Lincoln wheat to break the $100K mark will be the '19-P in 69RD, unless Stewart decides to sell some of his "lowly" teen 68RDs first.

    43-S copper, 43-D copper, several 43-P coppers and I think the 26-S MS65 RD ...
  • Thanks TDN, though the ones you mention are errors/varieties (except the 26-S in 65RD.) I was thinking only of "plain old" MS wheat cents, no errors or varieties. Did the 26-S really go for over $100K? Didn't Tom Mershon(sp) own it or still owns it?

    Thanks for any info!

The 1926-S in MS-65 Rd sold for $150,000 at auction around the first of the year and was purchased by dealer Bob Hughes. I brokered the sale of the coin out of Bob Hughes' inventory where a collector now has it (strong hands..doubt it will be up for sale anytime soon). It's the only 1926-S to achieve a MS-65 Rd grade. The Bozarth specimen sold around the same time ( MS-64 Rd) for $25,200 to another well-known dealer but hasn't upgraded, although I understand attempts have been made.It is not as fine as the MS-65 Rd and in my opinion it won't upgrade to a "65." Compared to the Bozarth coin, I have a MS-64 Rd on eBay now that's not quite as nice as Bozarth's but will sell for a far, far lower price.

    Ira:

Only a part of the Ann Kate auction has been conducted, and the only real "biggie" was the 1909-s VDB.

Many of the 1943 copper cents have sold for over $100,000. Over $200,000 for the 1943-D Copper. The 1926-s and other than the nicest 1958 DDO, no other lincoln cents have sold for $100K or more...

    Stewart, an observation:

You seem to be obsessed not with coins, or coin collecting, but with the prices that other people's coins might realize at auction. I don't think thats healthy.

    With 24 hours to go,

    1914-s - $69,690 (incl. BP)
    1909-s VDB - $87,400 (incl. BP)
    Doug

  • I think a lot of people thought the 14-S would be the big dog. From what I have heard, the 09-SVDB is probably #3 behind Gerry's and Stewart's coins. I think that point has been passed around and generated the interest in the 09-SVDB. I look at the 14-S image and don't get too excited. Meanwhile I have heard from some that it is a "monster coin". The race is on.

    << <i>Has the 1955 DDO cent met reserve? >>

Can't tell from the auction page, but at $47,150 (incl. BP) I suspect it has not reached reserve.

The 13-s is doing well at $55,890 (incl. BP). The Walsh coin that sold in January went for $63,250, and I would say strictly from the pictures that this coin is nicer than the Walsh coin. For the money, I like my 13-s in 65 a lot better than the Walsh coin too.

I thought Joshua and Ally were real people. I have a few of their large cents in my registry set, such as this 1828. image
  • Jack Lee bought a lot of stuff - even smaller (value) lincolns... He bought the 14-s, 25-s. The 1911, 1915-d sold CHEAP, (but there are plenty at that grade), and the 13-s didnt sell. The 1922 NO D sold to phone bidder, and the 55 DDO also a phone bidder, different than the 1922 NO D. After 1934 dated top pops, sold for record prices, to Jack Lee. Wasn't paying attention to who bought the 1909-s VDB, but I think that was a phone bidder also. Not Jack Lee. I was high bidder on Internet. ($76,000).

  • After selling my buffalo set. I got bold and put in a 78.000 bid on the 09-svdb before leaving the convention in the afternoon on thursday. image I must have been underbidder with 80.000 being winning bid. I liked the coin and was all giddy inside with the money from the buffalo set i sold. hmm!!! The common date 1916-p ms 67 was the nicest looking coin in the set to me. A flashy coin! Did not win that either.image
    Rick Hennessy
  • Rick:

It's interesting you say that about the 1916. MOST OF THE 1916 MS67's I have seen I think are the nicest lincoln cents in existence. There are many that should be 68's, and many I have said that to (who are lincoln kings) agree. My favorites of the set were 1911 67 RD, and the 1934 68 and the 1916. If I hadn't been busy buying dollars, I would of...

The 1909-S vdb: Interesting how the bids started, Rick. It opened at my high bid of 76, but why didnt it open at YOUR bid of 78??? Not sure how you bid... It jumped to 78, then 80 from a phone bidder...

  • Lloyd,
Not sure about the way b&m handled it. I had debbie M. put in the $78,000 bid when i left at 2:30 that afternoon and to floor bid the 1916-p.
She must have floor bid both.
    rick

  • Thanks for the report, Lloyd. I'm sure you and Stewart had a lot of fun. I was going to take Stewart up on his generous offer to bid for me, but I knew "the other Jack" would be up to his usual tricks. I figure it won't be too long and he should be finished, then a year later they will all hit the market again as Jack Lee 9 (or is it 10?).
