This piece is not in a slab, but it is the best example of a true MS-60, Red that I have. Although this piece shows up as a dull red here, at different angle the piece shows virtually full red color and luster with some black spots and finger prints.
This is a political campaign medalet for Constitutional Union candidates John Bell and Everate Everett. The 1860 presidential race was a four way contest that Abraham Lincoln won. Bell and Everett represented moderate southerners who well looking to avoid the Civil War. Their solution was to try to muddle through pretty much the way politicians had in the past. It won't have worked because things had just gone too far.
After the war Bell gave a pro Confederacy speach that got him on the list of traitors in many people's minds. Everett, who was once the president of Harvard University, is best remembered for a two hour speech at Gettysburg that was followed by a much better rememebered two minute speach by Abraham Lincoln.
