1981 Topps scratch-offs

I have several I want to submit. I guess I have to submit them as oversized? Any clarification will help.

They are considered tall boys for a submission. And, if you have any Murphys that get a nine, I know you could make some good $$$ off them. image

do you separate them or send the complete panel? would these grade similar to the squirt cards as far as separating at the perforations?

    Thanks,

You can send them in as either complete panels (much harder to get high grade in my opinion) or singles:

The Palmer card (as like others) has two different backs and the panels have several different combinations of the three players.

ok, i pulled a few that will probably yield 8s but will hope for higher.

what kind of holders do you put the complete panels in when submitting to psa?

    Thanks,

  • ld,
They fit in CS 4's. I have a bunch that I would like to submit but not sure my eye for them is good enough. Also if you would like to part with one of those boxes, let me know.

Also a question to the board. I have one that has none of the sctatch off material on it. It hasn't been sctatched just not a finished card. Any thoughts? The reason I ask is it's one of the top two Perez cards in the box I opened.

would the black dots being scratched from cards above it in the pack be considered "surface wear" and detrimental to the grade?

redroman, i'm thinking mine will be 7 and 8s. i will be hoping for 9s but it will be a longshot unless i can cut individuals. i'm planning to submit a few so we'll see.

    Thanks,

  • I would think that any scratches on the black dots would be detrimental to the grade. It seems like the ones I have that have good centering have that and the ones that aren't centered well have perfect dots.

could you email me a better scan of the palmer you have cut out? i'd like to see how it looks. i'm debating whether to cut or submit the entire panel.

i submitted 5 for grading just to see how they fared. 2-7's, 1-8, 2-9's. i've listed them on the bay. click 'my auctions' below. actually the 7s are either the first graded example period and the others are the highest graded. i thought the schmidt and ozzie were nice. i can't tell much difference from the 7s to the 9s.

    thanks for looking

The biggest problem i came across was the black ink transferring from the front of the card(the black circles) to the back side of the the top card through the whole pack. It was very hard to get more than a few per pack with a clean back. CENTERING is a whole "nother" issue.

These can be real touogh to grade high. I have a number of boxes and I've opened a dozen or so packs. Most have gum problems. I only pulled a few out that I thought could grade 8 or better.

I wonder if a panel will ever grade a 10. I know I've busted a number of boxes in such an effort.

Here's a few that I graded that got posted today. I've got a couple more coming back.

    45 06590209 1981 TOPPS 21 BUDDY BELL SCRATCH-OFFS 10
    46 06590210 1981 TOPPS 39 RICKEY HENDERSON SCRATCH-OFFS 9

    48 06590212 1981 TOPPS 64 JOHNNY BENCH SCRATCH-OFFS 9
    49 06590213 1981 TOPPS 67 KEITH HERNANDEZ SCRATCH-OFFS 10

MS, I noticed that you were interested in a Schmidt 9. It's for sale if you still need one. I'm not really sure what it's worth though.

I'll post pictures when I get these back for everyone to see. I'm curious too on how the 10's look. I can't remember how picky I was with the black dots being fully intact. I'm wondering if that was the difference between the 9's and 10's.
  • My thought is there will never be a 10 based on there are to many issues with those cards. Centering is a huge deal and the scratch off portion tend to rub off easily. I just had some pop that were (ST) and I missed it. I would just be happy with 8's

red, i think there are a couple of 10s out there now. i was lucky to hit a few 9s in october. those are very tough and 10s will be very very difficult IMO.

wabbit, can you scan your 10s? great job.

They're on their way back. I'll post them when I get them. The really puzzling thing is I took a small beating on the rest of my invoice so it's not like a got a good grader. He butchered me on my Burger King cards for my sets.

I have a bunch of boxes of the scratchoffs. I would be interested in how you chose your submissions.
  • LD, I saw the 10's that jusy popped on this thread. Maybe what I should have said was that I don't think there will be a 10 on the three card scratch offs. The current pop report lists 1 and it's a single card. Gaspipe, If you would like to part with a box or two I would be interested.

  • How do you seperate the singles? I would think that if you cut them with an exacto then they would come back as trimmed but looking at that 8 Palmer it looks like a pretty clean cut. I have only tried to bend them to get them seperated and they sure don't look that clean.

RedRomad i use a blade from a bic plastic razor and carefully let it follow the perforation. For an example take a look at my 1986 Carew Star Set under "baseball sets" on the registry. All were hand cut by me.

Here's one of my PSA 10's. I've been meaning to list all these for sale but my work loves me so much that they are honoring me with very long hours lately. I'll get them up eventually.

  • I was always under the impression that if it had factory perforation then it can't be cut. There was a discussion about it a few months back in regard to stamps. That kind of changes my thoughts about it and makes me want to send in some of mine that I have in lower grade.

nice job. what did you use to cut it?

    redroman,
i thought the same thing per the thread you mentioned regarding psa's stance. i guess it's a tossup as to what psa allows from time to time on these things..kind of frustrating.

I would imagine that eventually a PSA 10 panel will surface, but it might be a long time in waiting.

I was the first person ever to get a PSA 10 on a 1981 O-Pee-Chee baseball card [Bob Boone], and I think there are only two from the entire set today.

But given the bad economics of submitting panels [8s routinely lose money], it may be awhile. I think many of us here have opened up a couple of boxes of the 1981 Scratch-Offs, and between centering, wax stains, and the large size....a true PSA 10 of a panel may be a very rare feat indeed.

I used a razor blade to get a clean cut on the perferation. I wasn't sure if it was ok so I only subitted 5 cards to find out. I've heard horror stories though of people not getting them graded that way. Seems like to me though that as long your not removing part of the card, then it's not really trimming. JMO though. Trimming means that your removing 1/16 of an inch off a card, getting a clean separation really isn't the same thing.

The boxes I opened have some pretty clean panels. They are tough, but I'm gonna give it my best shot at trying for a 10 on a full panel. We'll see.

    David - Harsh grades.

The panels in 9 are very, very tough to get. And I recently sold a PSA 8 Schmidt panel on Ebay for only $0.99. There is huge risk $$-wise in sending these in, with very limited chance for reward.
