I'm a amateur colletor, and have a pretty large vintage collection of newspapers(Sporting News), world series and all-star program and ticket collection as well as items associated with the opening of the HOF in 1939. I'm looking for fellow addicts...

I refocused my collection last year by selling a ton of high end cards and adding a ton of autographed baseballs, photos, bats, programs, and even a ChiSox autographed World Series jersey (I'm a diehard ChiSox fan). However, I did keep my psa/dna HOF index card collection, my rookie card collection, and my autographed psa/dna slabbed vintage cards intact. With this said, I'm very glad I sold what cards I did and used the money to purchase autographed memorabilia.

Is your point that they are welcome? Check out the % that is dedicated to cards . I'm not trying to be a smart aleck, but you describe yourself as "collector", but what do you collect? Cards?
I think with a thread like this, you will be suprised at the responses. Just because most of the talk centers around cards does not mean that memorabilia threads are not welcome. I know some of these guys have some impressive items to show and a ton of useful information to share.
I will say again......and I think others will confur:

Memorabilia collectors unite!! Stand up and be heard!
Here's something that bugs me. I have found that for all the collectors of world series programs , the basis for the value found in the price guides is very arbitrary. I have talked to editors for 3 guides and none could say where they get the values. The price ranges...are they low book, high book...or are they VG--NM...no-one knows for sure. The guides tend to use each other as guides. (pun intended)
Robert Crestohhl in Canada published a guide in 1997 ( with David Alexander) . BTW... they also sell programs, sporting news issues etc.HMMMMM
sorry...the rant is over...
Looking for 81-84 Topps Stickers in PSA 9 or better, 81 Topps Scratch offs, 83 Topps Fold outs in PSA 8 or better, 83 Fleer Stamps and 81/86 Fleer Star Stickers in PSA 9 or better.

By the way, thanks RedRomad275 for your service in the military. Who is your favorite Red's player? My favorite is Dave Concepcion. I noticed you have a Dave Concepcion master set you are working on. I currently have the #1 set.
I find a lot of stuff cool and really interesting but cards are just so much simpler to date and authenticate than autos, gloves bats etc...its a neat market but its just not practical for me.
Groucho Marx
Good question...
But watch what you ask for!
I collect a little of everything - as long as it's Yanks and Dodgers - mostly.
Pubs: 55 NY yanks
Topps original comic art - from backs of cards: 67T and 65T
Oddball emphemera like a batting order signed by Mgr Boudreau which has Williams in the order.
WS Press pins - 1955 Dodgers v. Yanks - Bums won!
WS ticket stubbs - Ebbetts Field - classic!
1960 Hartlands - the "Mick"
Baseball table games - Mickey game circa 1950s and complete!
Team stadium pins:
GU unis to include classic school jerseys:
Autographed books - I have 3 different "mick" books along with Ali, Chamberlain, Bird, Russell etc.
Cancelled checks of HOF'ers:
Empty vintage wax w/Yanks e.g.: 68T
WS Programs: like the Yanks/Dodgers and some older ones:
Individual player stadium pins: again Mantle, DiMaggio - old Yanks
Hope I didn't kill anyone -- I could go on but...
Give someone else a chance.
My latest fun items that are cheap? Sports related whiskey decanters!

Speaking of the 1919 Reds World Series Champions, if any of you are in Cincinnati between now and Oct 3, the museum has a VERY NICE display of memorabilia from the 1919 season. It is WELL WORTH the time to see it. The highlight is the "final out" baseball of the 1919 World Series. The final out was made by Joe Jackson and the ball was kept by Hod Eller. This is the first time the ball has ever been on display.
<< <i>I have several items that are on loan to the Reds HOF and museum. I have a pair of ticket stubs to the first night game in Crosley Field (and in MLB), a Heinie Groh 1915 Baseball Magazine All Star Team Awared, a Johnny Vander Meer All-Star Game Award, an Ival Goodman All-Star Game Award, a 1976 World Series Game Used Ball, a Ted Kluszewski Game Used Bat, and a 1919 Ray Fisher player acquisition contract.

Very cool Cincy.
I have GU bats also, auto balls of HOFers, some uncut sheets (framed), gumball machines, an exhibit card vending machine, some action BB table games, etc.
Whose GU 76 WS bat do you have?
mike
The bat that I have is a Klu bat, used in the era he played for the Reds. The 1976 game used item is a ball. It was originally sold through the Reds 580 gift shop back in the 70's and was still in a bag with a cert of sorts that listed the date of the game. I believe it was game 4 of the series.
Cincy
Here's something you might appreciate then - sorry about the mixup - I see it says ball - you definitely don't want me operating on you!
It's a GU auto'ed Brett ball from his 3000th hit game - comes with letter from ump and PSA/DNA.

Thanx for the kind words, but I just have a pile of crap that I picked up while buying all those bricks of Cal Eldred, Pete Incaviglia, Jay Buhner, Phil Plantier.......
I have all the stadium of the original 16 teams except Griffith Stadium plus some old minor league parks like Wrigley Field and Gilmore Stadium.
Do you have any plans about displaying them?
Framing?
I have a lot of stuff to have framed - but it's not cheap.
mike
First one since I started here!
You're 100% correct about custom framing not being cheap. Just about every piece I buy not only gets reframed with a frame that matches the rest of my pieces, but also gets museum quality glass added. With this said, reframing for each piece averages about $200. However, I have a few items that are only worth a few hundred bucks each that I decided would not be worth reframing.

I have a few pieces framed - the comic art and card - where I paid like 25$ for the art and it cost 125$ to frame!
But, it's not the $, as such, but the quality of display - I think you are falling into that category.
So, we're both making the frame guys very, very happy.

That Brett ball is very nice. That is cool that it is from such a historic game. Are you a Royals fan? Not much to cheer about these days, but they were good back in Brett's days.

Haven't thought about the framing, although that is a nice option. Right now I don't have the wallspace to properly display them. I also have some postcards from my alma mater plus a nice T-6 Murad for Univ of Penn, that would really make a nice display.
I should scan my collection so that people can see the variety that is out there on the cards. Sounds like I have a new project!

I look forward to seeing your stuff Tom.
And as Rich said - if you get something framed, it's best to do with a "pro" - this stuff has to be done so it's archivally "safe" - non-acid backing, placed in so it can be retrieved without damage, and highly protective glass.
E.g. a friend took an item to Michaels who don't specialize in memorabilia - even tho he left instructions, they glued the auto pic to a backing and taped some cards! There's ways to "support" the item but still be able to take it out of the frame to sell - if needed.

Old Gold Babe Ruth
<< <i>I picked up this piece on Ebay last night. Sorry for no pic but it just ended. Does anyone here know anything about this item? I thought it was a decent deal considering it has the Babe on it.
Old Gold Babe Ruth >>
Hi Ted
If really from 1953, that's a cool item for 20 bucks! It will display really nice. I've never seen it before.
But like I said - if from that year - it's over 50 yrs old - and if a piece of crap - you're only out 20 bucks and shipping - I woulda hit for that price for sure.
I don't like those "private" guys tho.
Good luck and I would like to have your impression when you get it.
thanx for sharing
mike
1) With regards to your buddy and his Michaels experience. I can't imagine how pissed off your buddy must have been. Did you or someone else have to restrain him from attacking the idiot at Michaels who ruined the item?
2)You hit it on the nose regarding the "quality of the display". Not only is it important to me to have the autograph safe (Museum quality glass, Acid free backing etc..), but I want all my frames to have the same look or theme (colors do vary depending on the piece, but it would look odd for a metal frame mixed within all my wooden frames).

<< <i>Memorabilia collectors unite!!
not sure what you want to know...it's a mass produced modern piece...sorry >>
Blaze
With all due respect and deference...
First off, you made an appeal for memorabilia collectors to unite.
A person asks about the Ruth piece he bought and you give what I think is a very curt response.
Not sure what he wanted to know? Come on. He was looking for anyone who knew about the piece, some validation that he made a good buy or just a plain ole ataboy.
Not gonna get anyone excited about chatting with you IMO.
And, if that piece is real, I totally disagree with your "mass produced modern piece" response.
Memorabilia does NOT have to be "one of kind" to be valued by collectors.
Plus, not every can afford that - me included.
The 1960s Hartlands were "mass produced modern pieces" - but they are treasured by collectors.
mike
but if you look at the that seller's auction items, especially the completed items and you will see lots of this kind of stuff...fake old calendars etc I apologize if I was impatient.
As far as value and display - decide what means a lot to you personnaly....pay to have it framed, boxed , whatever. You will keep those pieces forever. Stuff you are on the cusp on.....forget price guides. Something is worth only what someone else is willing to pay. Dump those items and enjoy what floats your boat.
Don't be intimidated by posters who have huge collections to report on. They are in the minority. Keep the discussion going about your passion, and there will be many responses.
Best Regards.................................................

Your acknowledgment speaks volumes to being a true collector.
Thanx for the reply and I agree with Harry. There's a lot of people here who collect other stuff.
Knuckles not only does an incredible job with autographs, but also collects hockey memorabilia to include GU sticks and masks.
Things have been kind of slow but as time goes, you will see the people who collect other than cardboard.
Have you got pics/scans of some of your stuff?
I enjoy seeing what you guys have been collecting.
Friends!

I plan to inventory my collection, I have posted queeries about software on that subject previously. Sooooooon, I will get it done (LOL)... I'm a dentist who moved from modern cards ( can you spell Mcgwire rookie?) to programs and all things associated with the opening of the hall of fame. My camera is in the shop but I will try to borrow one and see what you all think. I have several prized items that are in my consulation room and I have added display cases that flank my baseball themed reef tank. (it's a cool custom cabinet with built-in bats, balls, and infield diamond...) Some of my favorites are very sweet '42,'43 and '47 all star programs, ticket stub and program from Larsen's perfecto, complete years of '27, 33-35, 39 as well as 51-54 sporting news. As far as the opening of the HOF, I have bats, pens, matchbooks, FDC's, programs, as well as broshures, schedules, wire photos , patches, and even an ashtray. The holy grail is an un-used ticket from the opening as well as a controversial
item....a signed autograph booklet cover signed by all 11 invitees for the opening ( even ty cobb who was late).
Without bogging down this thread, the autos might be genuine, but at least one authenticator says no...one says yes, but I will send to PSA should I sell it...
I also collect dental stuff , antique books and instruments. Luckily, I am running out of room, so my marriage is safe...

That's kind of a trip - I have this one. It's obviously the same shot, but there are some items, like the pole to the left of the guy standing up in the stands, that are edited out of yours and the centerfielder is gone from mine:
"All evil needs to triumph is for good men to do nothing."
I've noticed that there are a few varities of Polo Grounds cards that use that view. Postcards with that view are pretty common for being close to 100 years old.

Went to the Pologrounds as a kid - very oddly shaped but kind of cool - I liked Ebbets Field also and much smaller at only around 30K capacity.
The odd thing about the Polo Grounds was the center field area - it seemed to go forever!
