1913 Type 2 Buffalo: Ordinary date, extraordinary strike

I looked at bunch of examples at Heritage, present and past, and was startled. The strike is much better than a lot of 66s I see. Do our Buffalo fans here agree?

Then again, it may be fairly underwhelming

    I claim no expertise.....

But I have been looking for a 1913 type 2 for awhile, (1913 type set....don't ask image), and I can confirm that it at least looks a whole lot better than any I've run across!!

great obverse , above average reverse. i just got back from long beach and i saw a killer 13 type 2 in pcgs that sold for 9,500.00 to a high end buffalo collector freind of mine that im helping with his unregistered set and beleive me these coins are amazing. stay tuned as i am going to have a guess the grade on a 13d type 2 pcgs coin the begining of the week , im going to have mrd image this coin and post hopefully on monday night for everyone to see. and i bought this coin for myself and caitlen . lets just say ive never seen this date struck this well! LOOK OUT GERALD FORSYSTHE COLLECTION AND THE ILLINOIS COLLECTION . THERE WILL BE SOME SERIOUS COMPETITION.image

This is an expensive coin in 66 but yours sure looks close.

Fantastic hair detail on the Indian.

  • Very NICE. My eye is drawn to the buffalo's face. Nice details there, id say.

  • Wire rim validates the coin was struck with extra force, leading to extraordinary detail. Very nice coin!

That's a seriously wonderful looking T2 1913. Most are quite mushy in their strikes. Another great buff for your great collection Guy! image

A "wire rim" (actually a defect called a "fin") is not produced by abnormally high striking pressure. It results from a mismatch between planchet diameter, upset height and angle and die/collar diameter.

A well struck Buffalo nickel is generally the result of: correct planchet diameter and upset, proper annealing of the blanks, use of fresh dies. (Buffalo nickel dies deteriorated very quickly. Tiny particles chipped off of the relat8vely rough surfaces and acted like abrasive.) This is particularly true for pre-1916 issues, before the revised hubs were adopted.
