More times than not I have bid stupid money only to lose. I can think of a Connecticut commemorative from an ANR sale that went for mucho primo money............... but it had mucho primo eye appeal with stunning colors, and all coordinated just right.

    I brake for ear bars.

Over the past 25 years, I have doneso a few times. What is important, however, is there have also been a few occasions when it felt like even stupider money on lots that ended up being the best money spent. Discerning the two can be in a massive blur at times.

The holder is from that other 3rd party company-PGCS! That's a LOT even for another one of their errors! I think their biggest errors are many of the grades they issue as presented here on the boards.

  • More often than not, after a few years, I find I regret (and then re-sell) the coins I got for a bargain.

Yes, although often it turned out to be smart money. image
  • Yes, in both senses of the phrase: I've paid "stupid" money that wasn't stupid at all (like my MS65 icon coin) and I've paid stupid money that REALLY WAS STUPID! (The auction house, Early American, wouldn't take it back "because it was our boss' coin.")

There are a couple I over paid for and would do it again. Sometimes it is simply too tough to find a coin in the right grade, sometimes the coin is better than the holder says, and sometimes it is worse than it should be graded.

They say, "money talks." If saying "adios" is stupid, I have very stupid money consistently.

When I first started collecting, I was using ebay. image

I was looking for some Indian cents and I kept getting outbid on everything by the same bidder in the last few seconds of the auction-no matter what seller I chose. I started looking at the live auctions that he was bidding on and started making stupid bids hoping to make him go in the hole. Long story short, I made him pay BIG for all but one auction......500 common and low grade Lincoln cents that sold for $60. It is okay though, he paid ALOT more than he should have-because of me! imageimage

No. That's why I haven't won an auction lot in over a year.

The coins I paid 10 to 25 times Greysheet are my absolute favorites that sometimes even get Wows from other collectors. The bargins back of bid always seem to turn out to be mistakes-image

How do you know when you have paid stupid money? Is paying 63 money for a 62 considered stupid? 5 times sheet? 10 times sheet?

You don't know until you try to sell it and you only get a small fraction of what you paid.

Allright, I confess - I just placed an absentee bid for "Stupid Money" at Heritage...........................

Hopefully, I'll be underbidder - no, wait, I do want to win - but it is a lot of money..........................

The thing about "stupid money" at an auction is that there has to be two people willing to take it to "stupid money." So at least one isn't alone in their assessment of the value of the coin...
