Fugio Cent PCGS MS62 BN - ? value

emzeeemzee Posts: 1,862 ✭✭✭
A friend of mine has a bunch of coins bought in the 1970's as an investment and subsequently slabbed by PCGS at my advice. He is trying to value them and is using CW price guide to get some idea of value -there is no valuation of colonials. Does anyone know approximate wholesale/retail value of MS62 BN Fugio cent -it is the common variety (STATES UNI)? Thanks.

Probably a pretty good chunk of change. I just sold a VF25 for over $700.

  • You can go to the Heritage auction site and search the auction archives...I bet there is a current price in there....

  • With Fugio coppers, the grade means absolutely nothing when it comes to pricing. It's all about the eye appeal and the quality. There are really nice 62's and really ugle 62's, even in PCGS holders. You have to trust me on this. I have sold certified Fugios in mint state anywhere from $1,200 all the way up to $13,500 (well, that was an MS-66 RB that was one of the nicest in the Ford sale, but you get the point).

Club rays concaved ends, and club rays round ends are rarer than the pointed rays variety, and will fetch you more money.

Depends oon the die variety. There are a number of varieties that were well represented in the Bank of New York hoard which comprises nearly the entire extant uncirculated populations. For those varieties, being fairly common, you won't find a lot of appreciation though they tend to be very popular. There are many varieties that are unknown in uncirculated considtion and where AU pieces bring strong money from knowledgeable collectors. If you post some pics, some of us should be able to to figure out the Kessler number for it and arrive at some valuation appraisal.

Yes this pretty well sums it up. There are Fugios out there that qualify from a technical grade standpoint for MS-62, but have mint caused defects that make them that make them very undesirable. With the early coins, mint caused defects and certain mint errors can LOWER the value, not increase it.

For the record I sold a common variety (Bank of New York Hoard variety) Fugio cent in a PCGS MS-62 holder for a bit under $3,000.00. The coin had wonderful mahogany brown surfaces and was quite well struck on a decent planchet. I bought it at the FUN show for a customer who had left me a want list.

P.S. Mint State Fugio cents are NOT rare. There was hoard of several hundred of them that were in the Bank of New vaults for years. Over time the price of these coins has gone from a few hundred a piece to several thousand, depending upon the quality.
