Ugly PF66 Trade Dollar

I didn't think I would ever not like a proof 66 trade dollar, but this one is either plain ugly or it is a very poor photograph. Link

    It is quite drab.
  • That fugly grey toning makes it look like any other biz strike.

Not sure that it's "ugly", as much as it seems to just be dark. I'm guessing it's more pleasing in-hand.

A disturbing number of the MS 65-6 Seated & Trade $s I've seen have been dipped-out, ugly coins that I would not want in my collection under any circumstances.

That coin isn't dipped out, the mirrors have just been toned over.

This one is a proof and probably not as drab as the poor photography suggests. The stark white, dipped, and stripped proof trades do not appeal to me.

El Contador is correct. Finding an attractive and strictly grade MS65 or better trade is a major task. It seems TDN has them all bottled up. You can find PQ 64's with some regularity, but not PQ65's or a solid 66's.

There are countless medium-to-dark toned Proof coins which, if imaged at no angle and without a light hitting the toning/surfaces, look quite unappealing. Many of those same coins look quite nice under different lighting conditions. Odds are pretty good that the coin in question will look very different (and dare I say, even attractive?) in hand, if it's tilted and rotated under a light.

    I agree with coinguy.

For example, look at my Proof Trade dollar. If you just look at the straight-on photos, it looks dull and drab. However, if you tilt, it, you get a nice surprise.

So, if it is actually like VicPortland's then with a little bit of photo editing it might actually look something like this?
