Goldberg Variations ... or ... never buy a coin without looking at it yourself or having someone you

I've been eying this coin for awhile, but then tonight, I found the same coin in a previous Heritage auction (you'll have to sign in to Heritage to view it).

Every member needs to heed this advice. Having to learn it on your own can be very costly. Any guesses which picture looks like the coin. The answer is... none of the above.

Too bad there is no large reverse image in the Heritage auction. It would be a more interesting comparison.

That coin was also listed on Alabnese's site at I believe $4950. His photos were very similiar to the Goldberg photo. The reverse of the coin beautiful, but I dont care for the brown toning on Lincoln. The coin is, IMHO, not a 66 and not RED.

  • Did you see the black spot on Lincoln's face? Blatantly obvious on the Heritage photo. So Blatant, I thought it had to be something that fell onthe holder when they photographed it, that it couldn't possibly be onthe coin. Then, if you use the magnification thing on the Goldberg site, lo and behold, that black dot is very much there, just not apparently so due to their photography. And I agree with you, it can't be a PF66 and it certainly isn't red any longer, it's starting to turn (like so many 'red' coins).
