on average, how many coins do you look at between purchases?

i have to thank this board for making me become a lot
pickier on what i spend my money on.

i am finding that online i am viewing hundreds of half eagles
in search of a certain look and in my price range.

it is a real challenge for me.

if i had lots of money, yea i would cruise to a trusted dealer's
website and pick out a no-motto proof half eagle. but i cannot.

so i ask you here on this forum, just how many coins do you
look at between purchases, to find that certain one?

if you goto shows, feel free to chime in also. i wish i could
hit up 2-4 majors a year.

thanks

If looking at coin pictures over the internet, I would say certainly hundreds between purchases.

There is no way I can state an average number that would mean anything.

There are times when I look for a long time and don't like anything I see, there are other times
I look at stuff and like everything.

It varies. Online, I would have to say I view hundreds between purchases, but it's
sort of akin to quickly scanning a caseful of coins at a show looking for something
that catches my eye. Most are just a cursory glance as I open the page and quickly
reject the coin for one reason or another.

When I really take a close look at a coin for sale/auction online, that would be
like asking to see a coin out of a case. Then it's probably dozens between purchases.

easily hundreds, thanks to the internet!
  • I have no choice but to go through many hundreds between purchases. There are 1121 1921 Morgans on Ebay right now, and I look at every 1921 Morgan offered on Ebay, as well as other venues. I probably still miss half of the decent VAMs I could be catching.

I have to say as my collection improves the number of coins I look at inbetween goes up exponentially. Now that my set is complete I am taking much more time to find that natural dirty toned look instead of something bright and shiny.

It is amazing how many hundered year old gold pieces look so shiny and reflective most likely from dipping or cleaning.

Looking at coins is the primary reason I go to shows. I buy about 10 - 15 coins a year, and look at thousands.
